Can't change order of pages in menu. Not working right.
-
I have tried everything to arrange the pages of my website to display their link in the order I want. I have gone to ‘All pages’> click ‘quick edit’. moved to the right to ‘order’. Changed to the order I want.
Example: About this site..(1)
Symptoms checklist (2)….
and so on. I’ve looked, followed directions, exhausted all efforts, still can’t fix in the order I want.I’ve been to help menus, etc. Followed directions. Still no fix.
It rearranges how they appear on the pages, but not in the order I implement. Any suggestions in easy to understand language will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

If you have not done so you may wish to created a custom menu. > Appearance > Menus

http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/#changing-the-order-of-menu-items-and-creating-sub-menusTroubleshooting – My pages are in the wrong order
Check the sub-pages themselves to see if you have established a Parent page and child page “hierarchical structure” in the page attributes module. Remove if required. Also remove any “order” numbers you have assigned that may conflict with the order you are creating by dropping and dragging. Or simply change them so they are the same order as you establish in the menu. Establish consistency – problem solved. -
I still cannot figure this out. I am sorry, it is very complicated & I’m not technical language savvy.
I am trying, but it still won’t work.

There are two approaches you can use. This one is when you only have Pages.
Page Order – Page attributes module order numerically rather than alphabetically.

If someone would be willing to give me a step by step guide to fix this I would be most appreciative. The above suggestion is very good, but I don’t understand it.

If you don’t see the Page attributes module on your page, please make sure you’ve selected to display Pages in your Screen Options.

I have done exactly as the instructions spell. I have my pages listed in the order I want, from 1- 10. I updated each. They are still scrambled on the display of the web page, but show in correct order for my internal editing view.
Believe me, I’ve tried it all.

Your solution is to create a custom menu like I posted above.

I will work through the links you have provided. Your support is much appreciated & thank you for taking the time to explain.

I think the problem is that my “ordering” is not in a numerical format, somehow. I created a custom menu, reordered them by dragging and saving…in the order I want.
In doing so, this has changed the way the menu appears on my page, but not the correct order. I see how this works, but it’s not working for me. iHmmmmm.

I’m sorry I was unable to assist. Don’t despair as another Volunteer or Staff will help you.

Thank you…..I really have followed exact instructions. I don’t think I’ve missed anything. I even fixed the widget menu to the correct order. It worked, just not for the main menu. I’ll figure it out, one way or another.

Some themes have drop-downs menus natively and some don’t. I believe Spectrum is one of the latter. However, by removing all the hierarchical structure and the order numbers from all the Pages, creating a cusom menu, adding all Pages to it and creating an order by dropping and dragging this ought to have resolved the issue.

HOLD IT! I never said anything about the custom menu widget. I directed you to create a custom menu. I’m off to my test blog to put this theme up and create a cusom menu on it. I’ll be back when I’m done.

Okay I just did this in a test blog using Spectrum and had no trouble at all following my own instructions above.
1. I created pages and assigned no hierarchical structure (no parent & child page structure). I added no numbers to page order. I published the pages.
2. I created a primary menu titled “top navigation” here > Appearance > Menu and saved it http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/#creating-a-custom-menu
3. I selected the “top navigation” menu and added the pages to the custom menu. http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/#adding-pages
4. I created the sub-page structure by drop and drag.http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/#changing-the-order-of-menu-items-and-creating-sub-menus
5. I saved the custom menu.
6. I viewed the blog and it’s exactly the way I expected the custom menu to display in the exact order that I created.
-
I go into the ‘Pages’, all pages menu. It gives me a list of my pages I already have.
1. I removed the numbers from the ‘order’ tab under page attributes, updating each one. It shows ‘0’.
2. ‘No parent’ is displayed in that tab.
3. I go to ‘Appearance’ and ‘menu’.
4. I select ‘create new menu’.
5. It reads to ‘add menu items from the left’.
6. These are my pages…..I select all, then click ‘Add to menu’.
7. I click and drag, arranging the order I want the menu items to appear on my pages.
8. I click ‘Save Menu’.
9. I went to ‘Manage locations’
10. Theme Location: I choose the name of the the menu I just created.
11. I save .These are the steps I’m taking, in layman’s terms.
-
The ‘About this Site’ should be first; it’s not. That’s the way I save it, as that one first. It looks okay the way it is, but I still don’t know how I’m glitching this.

Ordering via order numbers (when you don’t use a custom menu) and ordering via repositioning items in a custom menu both work. You’ve been overlooking the fact that the top menu in Spectrum is right aligned: first = rightmost.
