Cannot change DNS settings in enom to WordPress.com locations

  • I registered my domain through Google Apps and now want to use my WordPress blog as my primary web site. I signed up for domain mapping but it asked me to change the DNS settings in ENOM to point to the ns1.wordpress.com locations, etc. When I try this, ENOM disables my host records and email settings. I’m using Google for email so I need functional MX records.

I’ve located a number of different possible answers but nothing is working so far. The other issue is that it could take 48 hours in between each change to determine if it worked. I’d really appreciate some detailed instructions on configuring domain mapping on ENOM. Otherwise, this could take weeks to figure out. Thanks!

  • Unfortunately, you’ll have to change the nameservers to point here in order to map your existing domain following this guide: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/

However, once that’s done you can follow this guide to setup Google Apps again with the same email address(es): http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/google-apps-email/

  • I followed these directions already, but ENOM disables the host records and email settings when I modify the DNS settings. There are no accessible fields to enter the MX values into ENOM at this point. This is my primary email account so I can’t afford to have it disabled.

Any other thoughts? I am willing to live with URL forwarding, but I haven’t been able to figure that out.

  • Once you point the name servers to the wordpress servers as macmanx describes you won’t change the DNS settings (add MX records) on ENUM – you will do it from the WordPress dashboard. If you go to Settings->domains there will be an “Edit DNS” option against your domain. Set the MX records there

  • Ohhh, I think I get it now. Duh. WordPress is my DNS server now that I setup domain mapping, so the entries I would have placed in ENOM before now go into the custom domain settings in the WordPress dashboard.

It’s working now, but I wonder if someone could add notes to these instructions: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/google-apps-email/ so they include the case where someone, like me, was already using Google apps. It was not clear what to do with the CNAME entry since I didn’t have a verification code, but I think you can enter anything you like for the code and generate the DNS records.

    Thanks for the help!
