Can I transfer from hosted WordPress to wordpress.com
-
Hello,
I have my blog hosted on my site and woud like to know if it is possible to migrate it to wordpress.com. Thanks! -
Yup but specific instructions depends on what version of wordpress you’re running currently.

Hi drmike,
I am using 2.0. I tried updating to 2.1.3, but my host is running lower versions of MySQL and PHP.
Thanks,
Taryn -
You’re going to have to install this plugin since it’s the 2.0 version that you’re running. Once you have it installed, go Dashboard -> Manage -> Export on your old blog to export out the data and save it to your desktop. The *.xml file you get is what you import here at wp.com at Dashbaord -> Manage -> Import.
Hope this helps,

Hi drmike,
I tried this and it tells me my backup directory is not writeable! It says:
WARNING: Your backup directory is NOT writable! We can not create the backup directory.
/home/virtual/site216/fst/var/www/html/blog/Not sure what to do….

Make /blog/ (and go ahead and make /wp-content/)writable. Set the permissions to ‘777’.

Hi,
I did that and was able to proceed and click the “backup” button, but then it said my permission was denied:
You don’t have permission to access /blog/wp-admin/edit.php on this server. Why is this so difficult :-(

I also gave up on this and started a new wordpress.com blog :-) It was just less stressful!
