App problem: first "unable to sync", now all blog posts disappeared

  • Hello.
This is the first time I try to ask for support on these forums, so apologies if I’m not doing it right. I looked for this problem and several posts came up, but I don’t think any of them solves my issue.

I have always been able to access my website (https://loudandclearreviews.com) on the app, without problems (and without even having Jetpack!), until a few weeks ago. The first problem I had was this message appearing whenever I tried to update my posts (which were updated as of 2 Jan 2020): “Unable to sync. The operation couldn’t be completed. (WordPressKit.WordPressOrgXMLRPCApiError error 0.).

Now, I created a username (the one I’m now using to write on this blog), connected my website with Jetpack (which I installed) and what is now happening is that, under “published”, it says “you haven’t published any posts yet”, which is not true.

Can anyone help? I would be so grateful!

    Thank you!

    Serena

  • Hi Serenea,

I have always been able to access my website (https://loudandclearreviews.com) on the app, without problems (and without even having Jetpack!)

So you’re referring to the mobile apps, correct? Android or iOS?

The first problem I had was this message appearing whenever I tried to update my posts (which were updated as of 2 Jan 2020): “Unable to sync. The operation couldn’t be completed. (WordPressKit.WordPressOrgXMLRPCApiError error 0.).

Okay, so the problem here is with the app being unable to connect to XML-RPC on your server. And if I try to view the XML-RPC page on your site at https://loudandclearreviews.com/xmlrpc.php I get a 403: Forbidden error, indicating that something, either your host or a security plugin on your site, is blocking it.

Adding Jetpack wouldn’t help in this case, as Jetpack relies on that same connection to get information from your site, so as long as XML-RPC is not working correctly, Jetpack won’t be able to sync up with your site either.

Please contact your hosting provider and make sure they haven’t disabled or blocked access to XML-RPC on your site. If they say everything is working as it should on their end, please contact the mobile app support team directly via the Help link in the app – tap on the Profile icon and then tap Help & Support. That will put you in touch with the mobile support team directly who can help you troubleshoot what else might be causing this.

  • Hi Kokkie,

Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a detailed reply!

We had installed a plugin that increased the website’s security, but it must have done something to its XML-RPC access! Deleting the plugin solved the problem! Thank you so much for all your help!

  • Excellent news! Thanks for letting me know.

You might want to contact support for that plugin and find out if it’s possible to add an exception to allow XML-RPC while still using the other features of that plugin, as site security is definitely important.

If you haven’t yet, I also suggest you look at the WordPress documentation for improving general site security:

If you have any questions about that, you can ask over at https://wordpress.org/support/forums/
