so how do we track readers using the Google analytics WordPress already has deployed into the templates?

You don’t. We bloggers do not have access to Google analytics that run on our blogs at wordpress.com http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/02/09/questions-about-stats/While it’s true that we can have 3rd party stats meters they will not give you referrers as we can cannot use the counters that rely on javascript. We can only use those that are html on wordpress.com blogs.
