Hi there,
Your site at http://www.toosanguine.com/ is not using WordPress.com, but is built with the open source WordPress software found over on WordPress.org. You can find their support forums here:
https://wordpress.org/support/
However, how featured images display on your site is controlled by your theme, so you can also try contacting your theme’s developer for help, or if your theme has a subforum on WordPress.org that might be the best place to ask.

The actual site IS the wordpress.com site http://www.toosanguine.wordpress.com.
The theme is Independent Publisher 2 -
This seems to be a duplicate thread already answered at https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/adding-link-to-a-featured-image-in-independent-publisher-2-theme?replies=3#post-3051434

Thanks for the link, @timethief.
On WordPress.com it’s not possible to add a link directly to a featured image, but featured images should by default link to the post where they appear in the main feed of the site.
If I view your site’s feed at https://toosanguine.wordpress.com/blog/ every featured image is linking to the post, same as the post title. That’s how it’s supposed to work and cannot be changed. Where exactly are you trying to add a link to the featured image?
-
Can you please give me the link you’re trying to share?
To test I pasted your most recent post, https://toosanguine.wordpress.com/2017/11/29/the-effing-ineffable/, into Facebook, and while the preview shows the correct featured image, it links back to your blog as it’s supposed to.

Yes! Pasting the link into social media does link back to the post. I had been sharing it using the “Sharing” option within the theme which appears to somehow to be causing the issue of identifying the image as unlinked. I don’t see how I can adjust that glitch but will now post manually to social media sites.

Interesting. I went back and shared that post using the Sharing button on your site, and it posted to Facebook exactly the same as when I manually shared the link, using a proper post card on Facebook:

I tested this with a few different posts, and can’t replicate what you describe where it’s just posting the image.
Can you please try the following for me: Clear your browser cache and cookies, and check your browser settings to make sure third party cookies are allowed.
Then log into Facebook, visit your site, and try sharing a post using the sharing button. Does it behave any differently?
-
OK Cleared browser cache and cookies…. third party cookies are allowed…. posted a test post to facebook via the sharing option in the theme resulting in a post with the link and the featured picture… but the picture linked to the facebook picture default: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10214523471624409&set=a.10206611633393398.1073741825.1349096643&type=3&theater whereas, if I copy the blog post link and paste it into a facebook post, clicking on the picture will send one directly to the blog post.

What sharing option in the theme? Are you speaking of the sharing button under the post?

but the picture linked to the facebook picture default: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10214523471624409&set=a.10206611633393398.1073741825.1349096643&type=3&theater
That link shows a message that the content is not available, so I cannot check it.
