Community Pool

The place for feedback, advice, and friendly blogging chatter.

Have you just published a new post and are dying for some feedback? Did you recently start your blog and could use some layout or design advice from your more seasoned peers?

Tap into the wisdom of The Daily Post blogging community and leave your question here in the comments. Others can then click through and offer input either on your site, or in the comments here (feel free to indicate which you’d prefer).

To help us make the Community Pool a productive space for discussion, here are some tips you might find useful:

TIP: To keep from losing your place in the comment thread while you visit others’ blogs, right-click on a link to open it in a new tab or window.

  • While you’re not required to, we encourage everyone who requests feedback to also reply to at least one or two other bloggers who need some help. Spread the love!
  • The Community Pool comments section can get quite big — and starting duplicate threads doesn’t help. Thanks for not posting the same question more than once!
  • If you’re looking for quality feedback, be as specific as you can. Questions about a particular post tend to draw more comments than ones about entire blogs. Questions about specific design elements are more likely to be answered than ones asking for general layout advice.
  • We discourage leaving links without a more substantive message or question. These are often overlooked by other bloggers, and we frequently remove them to make the comment reading experience smoother.
  • Please keep all comments civil and constructive. The idea is to have fun — it’s a pool, after all!
  • If you haven’t looked at our Commenting Guidelines in a while, now might be a good time.
  • No running on the deck.

    1. Hey,
I liked the way your blog is, the images and the events category.

If you can add the time taken or distance from one place to another or railway station to that particular place in the itineraries on your blog. Plus the fee or charges if applicable; If you’ll include these things it will be more handy for the travelers 🙂

      Thanks,
      Sara from Foodeez Junction

  1. Hey everyone!
My first time at the community pool, after taking a break from blogging for the birth of my son I just recently got back into it with a more polished vision behind what I want to blog about, but I’m still worried that it’s too general.
I would love your opinion as to whether I should narrow my focus more or not!
    Thank you!

    1. I really like the layout of your site – beautiful photos which really makes me want to stay and navigate. One thing I would suggest (not sure if it’s possible on your theme), is making the title headings a little bigger. Some of the subsequent sub headings actually are bigger than the blog post title. A small thing!

Re whether what you write about is too general? I’ve been blogging for two years across a range of different themes. My advice for what it’s worth is to write about what you enjoy – sticking to a specific theme can kill your creativity. Who knows what direction your blog will go by limiting your options from the outset.

      Best of luck

  3. Hi everyone!
Although I already have a number of readers, I am fairly new to Word Press. Guess I am not using 10% of the functions. I would like to get some feedback on the look & feel of my travel blog – is it too raw? or perhaps there is too much content already? Should I customize it more or is it enough the way it is? I will be very grateful for any comments you might have:

    1. Your site is quite stunning. To me, it looks like a magazine, white background with bright clear photos. I appreciate the fact that it has translation in English for reading. H

    1. I read a great post I found on pinterest recently about the legality behind it. Technically, even if you give credit, if you didn’t have permission to use a photo you can still get demands to take it down or even get sued! Just because it’s on google doesn’t mean it’s available for use. Giving credit can help, but if there isn’t photographer details definitely don’t use it!
The only exception I’ve heard of is items for sale (especially on Amazon or the like) if you link to where the reader can buy it 🙂 Otherwise, safest bet is to find free public photos, pay for the rights, or only use your own 🙂

    2. I think the thing to do in a scenario when you don’t have the photographers details is to put a disclaimer saying something along the lines of ‘all efforts have been made to credit the photographers. Sometimes no such credit is available, but if they become known all photos will be updated.’ That type of thing. Hope that helps 🙂

  4. Happy Monday and March everyone! I was a bit lax with my normal post schedule last week (I was on vacation) so I’m trying to get back into the swing of things. This post is composed of the daily writings I had from last week. Check it out here: https://sibillerose.wordpress.com/2016/03/07/dw-vacations/ I’m always looking for feedback and suggestions about my writing (or about anything else that could come to mind while viewing my site). And of course I’m always happy to take a look at others work as well. Thanks in advance!

  5. So I know that we’re all delighted to know that our creations (posts) are being read, thus why don’t you go to mine, check what’s wrong there (and give feedback about anything, maybe even some topics I can write?), and I’ll come to yours and do the same thing! (And if you have any feedback about layout pleaaaase kindly tell me how to change it to be better, I’m kinda blind in this layout changing matters hehe)

    It’ll be fun! (I guess :p)

    1. If you include a link to your blog it will be easier to find your creations 😉 Alright, so feedback! I don’t have much in regards to topics you can write, really you can write whatever you want with your set up! Sometimes that can be a downfall because too many choices can cause what’s called decision paralysis!
As far as layout, maybe try making your blog name in your header white? Right now it disappears and I can’t read it at all, that or lighten up your header image 🙂 Also, that font in your header is just generally difficult to read, I’d suggest trying another one.
If you get the chance, you should check out my blog series on my harry potter party! (I saw you were a fan 😉 ) https://mylifesdesigns.wordpress.com/2015/09/15/a-very-potter-halloween-party-part-1-invitations/

      1. Hi!
Aaaargh I meant to include it but I forgot, it’s https://yfns.wordpress.com (for those of you who haven’t visited yet), such a rookie mistake. Right, that’s the idea, there’s just a few posts right now but once it adds up, there’ll be far more topics than there is right now (I know it’ll be confusing for the readers but well that’s what I need this blog to be).
Meant to do that from long ago! I just can’t seem to make it turn white, I might just change the whole theme all along. Huh so it’s generally hard to read huh? Will consider changing that too.
a BIG fan, I literally grew up with the trouble trio. checking it out right now, the Hogwarts invitation style is especially good! I’d be thrilled to get one 😀

  8. Ever looked at a photograph and have a song that pops up in your head? Something that fits the mood, the atmosphere, the weather, or the lighting you see in the photo? That is what Soundtrack Of A Photograph does, finding musical connections between my photographs and the music I love. All comments and thoughts appreciated!

    1. This reminds me of my misspent youth playing Championship Manager and Football Manager on the PC, stats, stats and more stat’s. I like it, but I am a stats nerd, but I can see how the amount of data you have presented could overwhelm the casual reader. In all, the information is presented well, there’s just a lot of it.

      1. It does look like a lot, doesn’t it? In terms of word count it’s not much longer than my usual posts, but the graphs do take up a lot of space. I tried to create clear divisions between them with some white space between each one so it didn’t look too overwhelming. I’ll think about breaking it up a bit more in the future, maybe doing a Part I and Part II; team-based stats like table position and relegation in one part and league-based stats like goals and cards in the second part. Thanks for your feedback!

    2. Hi Alex – blimey! You must have loved Maths at school. That’s a lot of beautiful organisation of numbers.

A couple of things that would have made them clearer for me – something that differentiated the lines on the graphs. The colours were very close to each other – especially the blues and purples. Are they the actual colours of the teams? Do the teams have badges or symbols? Would broken lines or dots help? It seemed that Puebla (if I’m remembering right) changed from turquoise to purple in different graphs. I have a feeling other teams changed colours too. The one graph that had loads of lines criss crossing was quite difficult for me to grasp. Is there a way of breaking it down at all or does it only make sense if every team is in there? Maybe make more small graphs and then put them together in your giant graph?

I know very little about Mexican Futbol, so I’m commenting as a novice. Your charts bring the subject to visual life, so thank you for that.

      Best wishes
      Elaine

      1. Thank you for your feedback! The colors are generated automatically in the program I use and I’m sure there’s a way to change them but I haven’t figured it out yet! The crisscrossing one is a bit confusing, but the only way to clarify it would be to take out some of the teams. It gets clearer as the season goes on – the end of season one is easier to look at. I will try to figure out how to customize the colors by then! Thanks again for your comments/suggestions.

    1. Hey Penny, I am enjoying your blog, being a fellow horse enthusiast. I love the content and tips of saving money on everyday things so the money can be used for horse fund. But I can’t seem to be able to follow your blog or like or comment? Not sure if this is your settings or something wrong my side of things. I’ve not been blogging long so I could be me, but I’ve had no issues on other blogs. Thanks

    1. Hi,
Your site and style are really cute. I love what you did below the “Black on Black”…I would suggest maybe having different options creating different styles Day/Night for each one.

    1. Here goes – not a massive fan of your theme. The purple backdrop doesn’t work for me – then as I scroll down it changes colour. Little bit inconsistent. An all white backdrop with standard format/font and black colour text fits my taste better.

The images are very big – not sure how that reads on a mobile/tablet device but on my laptop it means even more scrolling. Perhaps make images 300×300 so text can wrap around it and you can fit more on the virtual page.

      Best of luck.

    2. Hi. I’m looking at your site on mobile and the text flow and picture size is great. I’m finding the colour changing background a little overwhelming though, maybe aim for a more simplistic theme that let’s your content shine.
      Hope that’s helpful!

  9. Hello blogging world mates.
Writing has been a wonderful path for me to express my thoughts into words. And my blog doesn’t just have my rants or views, but I try to include all that my mind conjures up. So I have my views, books that I review, poetry that I write and some short stories that are waiting for their readers. Today, I changed its look (theme) and would like to know your opinion about it.
I’d like to share one of my poems here for you all.

    I’ll make myself!

Thanks for reading and visiting too (if you do so!)
    Regards.

  13. Hello guys!
I’m a new blogger – never done this before but wanted to share my love for fashion with the world. I would love if you were able to check out my blog and give me some feedback on its design and writing style. There isn’t an awful lot of content there yet as I only started the blog less than a week ago, however I’m sure I could still learn a lot about future posts from your feedback.

    Thank you 🙂

    1. Really like your theme – a good fit for your topic. I like to see an ‘About Me’ section. It’s one of the first things I read when I stumble upon a blog for the first time to see whether I would be interested in following the blog. Also, it’s a good way to find out who is behind the blog – strengthens that connection between creator and reader.
