The place for advice, feedback, and friendly blogging chatter.
Have you just published a new post and are dying for some feedback? Did you recently start your blog and could use some layout or design advice from your more seasoned peers?
Tap into the wisdom of The Daily Post blogging community and leave your question here in the comments. Others can then click through and offer input either on your site, or in the comments here (feel free to indicate which you’d prefer).
To help us make the Community Pool a productive space for discussion, here are some tips you might find useful:
TIP: To keep from losing your place in the comment thread while you visit others’ blogs, right-click on a link to open it in a new tab or window.
- While you’re not required to, we encourage everyone who requests feedback to also reply to at least one or two other bloggers who need some help. Spread the love!
- The Community Pool comments section can get quite big — and starting duplicate threads doesn’t help. Thanks for not posting the same question more than once!
- If you’re looking for quality feedback, be as specific as you can. Questions about a particular post tend to draw more comments than ones about entire blogs. Questions about specific design elements are more likely to be answered than ones asking for general layout advice.
- We discourage leaving links without a more substantive message or question. These are often overlooked by other bloggers, and we frequently remove them to make the comment reading experience smoother.
- Please keep all comments civil and constructive. The idea is to have fun — it’s a pool, after all!
- If you haven’t looked at our Commenting Guidelines in a while, now might be a good time.
- No running on the deck.

Howdy Amigos,
I recently got rid of my old theme and started a new one from scratch. It’s missing something, but I can’t figure out what that something is. If you could look over the page and tell me what you think of the image layout and widgets, I will be forever in your debt.

I like the overall look, but have you thought of moving your widgets around a little? I think it might stand out more if you have the mini-bio and follow options oriented higher up on the screen.
LikeLike
Much appreciated Leisel!
I’ve toyed with the widgets and would like to add the follow buttons higher, but with this theme each widget is surrounded by a gray box of the same width, meaning the thinner follow bottons put a lot of blank gray space around them and give the top of the page a weird look. I think I´ll move the bio up though, thanks!

I like your new theme. I like it particularly because a bunch of posts are all visible right there in one spot on the main page. I think you stand to have more readers clicking on things that interest them in case your most recent post does not. Kudos for having the guts to change your theme. I have been wanting to for a while and haven’t had the guts. 🙂

I really liked the layout and content – it’s easy to navigate and is well broken up with your mixture of images and text. Loved your Hobbes and that he has his own section too! But I know what it’s like to have a nagging feeling something isn’t quite right – my advice would be to leave it alone a bit and then maybe tweak it in a week or two if not happy – the ‘thing’ might jump out at you then 🙂

I like the overall layout. I am especially fond of how the post are laid out like news features. A texture in the background instead of the flat gray may give it a stronger look; really sharpen it’s appearance.

I like that you can click on a number of entries from the home page and that you have organized your content very very well! I would consider having a less bold font and let the images speak more for themselves and make it look a bit less cluttered. I would also make the “Into The Mild” stand out by writing in caps lock of making it have greater contrast with the background. Your content is great, especially the UN Bears!

Hail, pool-goers! I am Leisel of the geeky food blog Skill Up Skillet and I am vaguely speaking like a Renfair attendant because no one will supply me with caffeine. Dastardly fools! I come to you this fine day with but two requests:
First, dost thou enjoy fancily frosted cookies of sugar? Aye? Then perhaps you may be inclined to lay your eyes upon my Nightmare Before Christmas cookies! I even show you step-by-step how to get those fine details without tearing your hair out. IMO, pretty cool stuff. Recipe: http://skillupskillet.com/2015/10/09/nightmare-before-christmas-sugar-cookies/
Second, I question the relevancy of my One- Two- Three- and Four-Skillet difficulty tabs listed in the top menu section. Does anyone click these filters? Does anyone care? Would it be better to condense these into a single Random Fandom Recipe button? I feel like these may have become obsolete with the implementation of the Feed Your Fandom menu on the left. ‘twould please me greatly if you are able to offer me any insight regarding this issue.
Cheers, fair ladies. And a salute to the noble gents as well. I shall be watching and offering up suggestions and/or feedback as I am able. (Someone bring me coffee, please.)

Your cookies look awesome! That took some skill.
re your skillet tabs, I found the font of your different pages quite small in contrast to your header so they got a little lost. If I hadn’t been going there with the intent to look at them, I might not have been as inclined.
What about making one recipe page with the skillet level next to each recipe? That might be less work for both you and your reader.

Thanks! I really enjoyed making these cookies, I love making art. That’s an interesting concept for the recipes, I’ll keep it in mind.

First off I love the categories off to the left side so viewers can click on what interests them. I think you should totally keep that. The one skillet two skillet three…doesn’t really make sense to me even though I think it sounds humorous which is good. I guess I wouldn’t think to click on it. But, sense you asked I did and I still don’t know what the difference is between one to the next. Perhaps a different idea might be worth a try.
Love the talking like a Ren Fair attendant. You should write an entire post like that. It’s hilarious.

Your blog is beautiful. Nice job. I love your use of widgets. They make sense and are not overdone. The only thing I might recommend is using at least one photo per post that shows up on the main page. For visual people this might encourage them to click on the post. Good morning, Does your theme allow for an image at the top of your blog page? It seems very stark which I like but it makes it hard to understand quickly what the blog is about.
You might also consider widgets down the side of your blog to encourage people to connect with you on social media or perhaps categorize your posts so readers can click on historical posts more easily. Maybe also a search block so users can see what else you have posted. Best of luck to you!

I think the design and the photos you have on your blog are great, so I would not really change much as far as I can see. The content I can’t say much without translating the page but your photos are strong and pleasing and really jump out at you to get a readers attention. As to getting more readers it really is just a matter of getting it out there on social media. I notice you take a lot of architectural type shots, so find some Facebook or Twitter pages that have the same kind of content and share your work there.

I love the screen at the top of your blog. I think it is colorful and I love that you can click on each link. It looks like your title page might be bunched up a little bit. You might want to look at that. Where it says you and your mobile. Also I would suggest the use of some widgets down the side of your blog. The way you have it set up doesn’t allow readers to search in your blog or to look at categories or historic posts easily. Perhaps if you add those to the right or left side of your blog it will encourage readers to stick around and read more of your work. Best of luck to you.

I don’t generally do a lot of photo editing, so I am mainly looking for a good compression feature.

It’s my first time blogging so I’d love some feedback on my site:
https://beakerly.wordpress.com/
Specifically I’d love to hear from non-scientist peeps, because my content should be accessible to everyone, no matter what level of education you have.
Cheers!

Well first off I followed you because I have not seen too many science blogs here on WordPress so I am happy to follow yours! Your site looks great. Easy navigation, just the right amount of words per blog post before choosing one you want to read more in depth (which I will certainly be doing!) I glanced just now and I think the content is good too. Not too scientific, not too technical, yet engaging.

Hey Emily,
I’m a teenager interested in going into the medical field, and in the process of writing a book. I also have a science fair project going on revolving around nanovehicles. Is there any way you could help me?
I’d love to check out your blog! Visit mine at http://www.pallodium.wordpress.com

I’ll check your blog ASAP 🙂
As for the nanovehicles project, it’s not my field (I’m more in the biology world), but if you’d like to ask me some specific questions (e.g. if you find some info online that’s a bit too technical ), I’ll be glad to take a look and see if I can decipher it.
Cheers

Heya, I took a look at your blog… your writing is very cool, and I love that you’re an aspiring neurosurgeon. Really I’m impressed you’re doing so much with your teenage years… I think I just sat around and read!
Very moving pictures too 🙂

You are cute as a button. I love your description of yourself with Italian frosting. I too have a travel blog and I look forward to following you on your African adventure. I am no scientist although I do have an interest in it so that will be an added bonus. I love the layout of your blog and how cheerful it seems. Best of luck to you and I look forward to your future posts and photos.

Hey everyone! I’ve two posts I’d love feedback on this week please – both with a spooky twist 🙂
My first looks at my journey to become a witch – it’s a lighthearted look, although I’m concerned it’s offended someone (which wasn’t my intention)
The second is my Monday Munchie post – this week, I’ve baked House Elves. Did you know Dobby taste delicious?!
Thanks for reading 🙂

Really? You think you pissed someone off about the witchy post? Ha! As someone who studies the occult (who also lives in a house full of pagans, mind) I found the post to be rather cute. Might’ve spooked some of the kids I went to Catholic school with, but oh well.

Hmmm, I don’t really know what to think. It got removed from the weekend meet and greet – it could have been a technical reason (and I’m being paranoid!) but I’ve messaged to ask why and whether it was deemed inappropriate but have had no response. Just kind of makes me not want to take part again 😦 You study the occult though? Cool – see I’m more likely to offend you by not knowing what I’m talking about!!

Thank you and thanks for following! Are you just starting out with your blog? Great to see you’re tackling serious subjects. I’d suggest playing around with your menu though – your ‘Hot topics’ section just links back to ‘About’ (possibly as not much content yet), Also, perhaps include a ‘read more’ button in your post – this will help readers navigate more easily when you get further posts published, without them having to scroll endlessly to reach a previous article. Hope this helps! 🙂

Thank you so so so much! As a new blogger this helps a lot. Yes, I started on October 1st, and I so far only have one post. How do you add a read more button?
Thanks again,
Aditi

No problem 🙂 When you create your post, on the taskbar (edit toolbar) there’s a little icon – a rectangle with a dotted line through it. If you hover over any of the icons, it will show up what they all are.
I saw your comment about comments too – I don’t think you can edit once sent or change font size. But some themes do have the comment box appearing first – if you go to settings-discussion – you can edit it so that newest comments appear first. This might solve the problem. Hopefully!

Love your acrostic Haiku! I got obsessed with haiku a loooong time ago but never had the guts to write my own (my science brain is a little scared of such open creativity).
You should fly more often so you get trapped and have to write more 😉

Hi,
I found your blog to be very raw. I enjoyed how genuine you are in your posts. The visuals definitely bring depth into your posts as well. The only thing I’d suggest is if you made an About page so that people like me can get to know you more personally 🙂 It helps better understand your posts and your blog. Other than that, you’re doing great! Cheers!

I nearly skipped this as your intro didn’t say much (there is so much stuff I bypass on here) it was only when I glimpsed John Chon’s comment about being raw that I dropped on by.
I’ll admit I am not keen on poetry so I looked for non poetry posts, I really enjoyed your “selfish” post on 6th October, it is like a snap shop of a moment in time and they are the sort of posts I can realate too. I found the font a little small but then that is probably my eyes failing. Nice blog, Ill add to my reader.

Thanks very much. If your Dad lives there then you must go. It is a wonderful place to go and visit all of the flora without having to venture out in to the wild desert. They have a great little cafe too. And I understand they even do lantern shows in the winter at night. That sounded really fun to me. Thanks for the comment and for stopping by. I hope to see you on my blog again in the future.

I like your site. I think it is bright and cheerful and you have a good use of photos that grabbed my attention. You have a good use of widgets on the side but didnt overuse them. You allow users to search on your older stuff by category which is one of my favorite things to look through on a blog I love. Keep up the good work.

Nice blog, I think it’s important to see a glimpse into the lives of the families of those who serve.
In general I like the theme, and since you have a passion for photography, I’d say make more of a feature of that 🙂 Like what about some navy-themed ones? (don’t know if you’re allowed to photograph things like the people in uniforms or training etc, but for me at least that would be interesting!)
Cheers, Em

I had a question about comments. I’m not sure if my comments are even visible on my page. I think you have to click on something to see them, so can anyone tell me what exactly is going on there? On my old blog, the comments box for leaving a comment was always there. I’m also wondering why the comments box is below ALL of the comments. Popular blogs have more than 30 comments already and it’s tedious to scroll all the way just to type a comment on your own. Is there any theme that isn’t that way or is there any way to change that? Additionally, since this comment is so large, I am unable to increase the size, nor does it automatically do it for me to see the text. I need to increase the box in the corner. Some themes don’t do that…Are there any who automatically scale the size of the comment box so you can see everything in it?
Sorry for all the questions, ask me if you need help with whatever I wrote. 🙂
Thank you so much!
Love,
Aditi

Also, is there an edit comment button? Again, I apologize for all the questions, but as a person whose blog is less than a month old, I have some concerns… 😐 🙂

Alright I am here to answer all your questions to the best of my ability.
Comments are at the bottom of every post and I think are always visible (unless you have comments turned off) but they’re only visible on posts, not pages (so they can’t be seen from the Home page).
In settings, you can change how many comments are visible on your own blog.
The writing box won’t expand, and as far as I know, there’s no limit to how long a comment can be. That being said, if it is really long, a fun thing to do would be write it as your own post and link the blog that you wanted to comment on.
You can edit comments on your own blog (both that you wrote and that others wrote) but you cannot edit comments on other people’s blogs or here in the Pool.
Hope that helps and feel free to ask more questions if you have them! People are here to help!

I like the sense of humor you project right from the start of your blog. I can see that it is not all fun and you write about some serious topics but I think it looks good. It’s probably because I am old (lol) but I have a hard time with GIF’s and tumblr links. They tend to make me a little dizzy so maybe limit the amount you are using but your layout itself looks great. You can find me at https://robpatdoy.wordpress.com/

Great start. Love the use of photos. I like that the social media links are there but do not take over the page. You might want to think about categorizing your posts now before you have too many and then making those available for us to look at and search on. Then if people click on your page they will be able to pick and choose what they want to look at in your historical archives. I think you have something along those lines on the bottom but perhaps there is something you can put down the side or farther up top. Great start. I followed you and look forward to seeing where you go next. Lago de Garda is one of my favorite places in the world.
