Community Pool

The place for advice, feedback, and friendly blogging conversation.

Have you just published a new post and are dying for some feedback? Did you recently start your blog and could use some layout or design advice from your more seasoned peers?

Tap into the wisdom of The Daily Post blogging community and leave your question here in the comments. Others can then click through and offer input either on your site, or in the comments here (feel free to indicate which you’d prefer).

To help us make the Community Pool a productive space for discussion, here are some tips you might find useful:

TIP: To keep from losing your place in the comment thread while you visit others’ blogs, right-click on a link to open it in a new tab or window.

  • While you’re not required to, we encourage everyone who requests feedback to also reply to at least one or two other bloggers who need some help. Spread the love!
  • The Community Pool comments section can get quite big — and starting duplicate threads doesn’t help. Thanks for not posting the same question more than once!
  • If you’re looking for quality feedback, be as specific as you can. Questions about a particular post tend to draw more comments than ones about entire blogs. Questions about specific design elements are more likely to be answered than ones asking for general layout advice.
  • We discourage leaving links without a more substantive message or question. These are often overlooked by other bloggers, and we frequently remove them to make the comment reading experience smoother.
  • Please keep all comments civil and constructive. The idea is to have fun — it’s a pool, after all!
  • If you haven’t looked at our Commenting Guidelines in a while, now might be a good time.
  • No running on the deck.

      1. any theme labeled as responsive will do that. There’s probably a way to edit the css file if you’re on WordPress.org. If you’re on WordPress.com I’m not so sure.

  1. Hey people ! It’s been about a month I guess, since I started my blog ! I’ve published 11 posts I guess, I’d like it if you could give me some feedback on as to how I could improve my blog, especially the inquisitive mind sections. Since I’ve seen that poetry and the stubborn heart pages receive more views, I wonder why. Also, if there are any communities I can join in any other social platform, I’d like to know that as well ! So that I can take part in upcoming competitions !
Here’s the link to my blog-

  3. Hi everyone,
I would really appreciate some feedback on my writing style and my blog in general. I write about a range of topics but my most recent post is called ‘Communication: talking vs texting’. All feedback/ constructive criticism helps me to improve the quality of my blog which I am thankful for.

      1. Thank you Wayne for giving it a shot! I’ll resize the graphics, that’s a great idea. Was it over your head because it’s topics you do not usually read about, or would you suggest a complete rewrite?

      2. Yikes. I hate to say “dumb it down” but it read like a theology post. I needed to re-read paragraphs out loud to comprehend the ideas and I still left confused. That’s just me and admittedly I’m no rocket scientist.

      3. I don’t think it’s necessarily dumbing it down! It could be that I need to reformulate it better. Thank you for taking time to share, it gives me a lot of food for thought!

      1. Thank you! I’m not pushing except for a little on Twitter. I’m kind of a secretive blogger but I’ve grown my other blog to almost 2000 so I guess I’m just frustrated with starting all over. Thanks for replying!!

    1. I’ve found this as well, but I tend to think people don’t comment too much on poetry, simply because there is often nothing to say, and if you like it you like it 🙂 I like your blog though, the poems are well written and varied 🙂

  4. Hello everyone 🙂

I’ve recently come back to my blog after a while, at first I didn’t seem to be getting any comments or feedback on my writing so I got anxious and went back into myself again. But now I feel more confident to share my writing and my personal thoughts. Would you mind having a look at my blog please? I’m not too sure about the theme? Is there anything missing? Constructive criticism too? Any advice on topics for personal blogging? I seem to go a bit blank when it comes to that. And anything else you think helpfully, would all be greatly appreciated 🙂

    1. I love the theme and the way you’re using it. Here’s some feedback on your frontpage.

Are you mixing stock photos and personal photos? Your personal photos work better and have a more personal touch.

Some of the photos are square cropped and some are not, leaving black bars on top and bottom. It has a slight disjointed feeling from picture to picture. Again, I think if you changed them to your personal photos that would resolve itself.

Great blog! That’s one of my favorite themes.

      1. I did think more personal would be best, I didn’t know they were leaving black bars, thank you for telling me! 🙂

    2. Not many comments? In photography and poetry I don’t get many because I don’t often ask questions. I read that asking specific questions can help to generate responses. You asked for some suggestions for poetry books. Good! (I just commented there)
I think if you start posting to some of the Postaday challenges and enjoying what other people post, you’ll naturally start finding your favorites and they will find you!

  5. Hi guys! These are great reads. 🙂 I am a brand new author and I am part way through my first attempt at a psychological thriller. I have set up my blog to try and build some hype but also to have that backbone of followers that I’m sure I will need when it comes to being released. Any ideas and tips that you could give me to keep my posts interesting without giving too much away about my book course, would be a great help! http://www.markdraycott.com

  6. I would love some advice on my new blog. I just started last week and am feeling a bit discouraged. I am finding the whole sharing personal stories part very difficult to do with close friends so I was hoping to go with some strangers first. I would love any feedback!

  7. Beautiful post!! “The Boy That Jumped” was so moving. I just finished commenting on it. I’ve looked at a few other posts of yours and I couldn’t help , I just had to follow. I love you’re writing style. If you have time, I’d love for you to check out my blog as well.
This indeed is a beautiful post,:). I enjoyed its emotionality and the format of a letter – in its entirety, it feels like a strong, complete, finished piece.

I too would like some feedback, my blog’s address and questions are amongst others’ in this conversation thread :).

    1. Hi! And welcome to WordPress. The content of your blog is very personal and it’s always good to write what you’re feeling. The one thing I would say is that it is a little stark, maybe think about adding some colour or a sidebar or even some photos something just so it doesn’t just look like an intimidating wall of text. Otherwise a great first effort, and keep it up! 🙂

      1. Hi, no problem! I think the colour and sidebar depends on the theme you’ve chosen but if you hover over ‘My Sites’ and then click on Customize you should be able to play around with it. In terms of photos I just meant add some photos either into the posts or at the top of your page, just to break up the text a bit 🙂

  8. Hi there!

I would like to have some feedback on my writing, as well as general thoughts or suggestions. I’ve always been quite shy about sharing my blog, so getting some reactions from all you would mean a lot to me. Please note that I am very sarcastic, but that’s just my sense of humor. If anything is found offensive, do not hesitate to point that out (I would never want to hurt someone). Thank you so much in advance!

      1. Thank you so much! Saw your comment (made me smile), and I must admit you’re probably right: dressing up barbies all day long definitely isn’t the worst thing out there 😉 I’ll try to work on my about page, thanks for the advice! Oh, and I think the theme is “sela” 🙂

    1. Hi – I think you tell your story very well and very clearly in your post. It’s inspiring for other mature students or for people wondering if they’ve left it ‘too late.’ You’re living proof that they haven’t and, maybe, reading your post will encourage your readers to join the flow of education again.

All good luck with your blog

      1. Most people clock up some ‘not too flattering’ years at some point in their lives. It’s not only teenagers who find themselves turning down the wrong path. You speak about your early years in a way that’s light and honest. There’s a gift to that.
