Looking for some blogging advice? You’re in the right place.

Have you just published a new post and are dying for some feedback? Did you recently start your blog and could use some layout or design advice from your more seasoned peers?

Tap into the wisdom of The Daily Post blogging community and leave your question here in the comments. Others can then click through and offer input either on your site, or in the comments here (feel free to indicate which you’d prefer).

To help us make the Community Pool a productive space for discussion, here are some tips you might find useful:

TIP: To keep from losing your place in the comment thread while you visit others’ blogs, right-click on a link to open it in a new tab or window.

  • While you’re not required to, we encourage everyone who requests feedback to also reply to at least one or two other bloggers who need some help. Spread the love!
  • The Community Pool comments section can get quite big — and starting duplicate threads doesn’t help. Thanks for not posting the same question more than once!
  • If you’re looking for quality feedback, be as specific as you can. Questions about a particular post tend to draw more comments than ones about entire blogs. Questions about specific design elements are more likely to be answered than ones asking for general layout advice.
  • We discourage leaving links without a more substantive message or question. These are often overlooked by other bloggers, and we frequently remove them to make the comment reading experience smoother.
  • Please keep all comments civil and constructive. The idea is to have fun — it’s a pool, after all!
  • If you haven’t looked at our Commenting Guidelines in a while, now might be a good time.

    1. Looks amazing and a humourous commentary. I hope the plaster gnomes are better now.

      I loved the embedded videos but they did give my computer a heart attack and made everything go slow.

      2. I do find them distracting in some peoples posts, that tends to be when they’re really fast movey flashy ones. These were nice amd subtle so ot was ok. I think it might have been a bit of a load on my browser but that might just be because my pc is terrible…

    3. HI Mara, I liked the writing and agree that maybe one or 2 of the jokes were predictable (shooting down the plane) but it was otherwise good and informative. I also liked the gifs although I thought the 2 in the middle (pebbles and then the plan tress after) were a little pointless. However the wave gifs and the boat gif was great.

    4. Loved your blog. Very well writen. I didn’t even mind the jokes, and I’m a bit of a comedy snob. It is a holiday after all. The giant GIF files really made the screen come to life. Lovely touch.

    5. ‘Yet, we trustfully left them in the hands of…’ sounds a little awkward. Maybe something like ‘However, we decided to trust our instincts and left them in the capable hands of other family members’ — something like that anyway.

      Second paragraph: I packed our suitcases…

      Overkill on using the word ‘hubby’ – mix it up a bit: my husband, my spouse, my better half or better still refer to him by his first name.

      Love the use of video clips throughout; however, stills would work just as well.

      Not sure jokes referring to UBL are appropriate in any context. Probably just me but mentioning that in tandem with your comments about metal detectors in security made me feel a tad uncomfortable. Yes, political correctness be damned. Still, I stand by my comment here. 🙂

      Strong first paragraph in your Impressions section.

      Re: your reference to cocaine — also a little disconcerting…

      Love your top 5 worst beach crimes — made me laugh! Totally agree. 🙂

      All in all though an enjoyable read!

        It helps that you point out the awkward sentences; not being a native speaker, I’m sure I often sound awkward. I like your reformulation of the sentence 🙂

        Yes, you are right, the word “hubby” overkill is so obvious. How did I not notice that? Your synonyms will come in handy!

        As to the media, I think next time I’ll try a mixture of gifs and stills to accommodate all tastes and not to slow down anyone’s computer with the huge amounts of data that gifs are.

        Re political correctness, this is an interesting point that actually didn’t occur to me. You see, in Eastern Europe, which is my native culture, political correctness is not a big issue. We’re free to joke even about very serious things, and it is understood that no harm is intended. However, as I’m obviously writing for readers potentially from all over the world and as I would hate to upset anyone, I will think about this more the next time.

Well, you identified the style I’m trying to do pretty fast — deadpan humour is indeed my thing 🙂 You’re right about the photos: I’m a bit limited in that I prefer to blog anonymously and not to publish photos where I’m recognisable, but of course I could and should find some photos of my own rather than using the stock photos so often.     8. Hi Mara – I enjoyed your post. Your voice is very clear and full of character.

      I’d agree with julieallyn about ‘hubby.’ I’ve read posts and newspaper columns where the writer refers to their husband/partner with a capital letter – B or Z or whatever. Then they don’t have to keep thinking up new ways to name them. Readers start to get to ‘know’ the character of Q or W through the writing. (Like M in James Bond!) ‘Hubby’ in the UK, to me anyway, unless it’s obvious that it’s being used highly ironically, conjures up a picture of a man in slippers, cosy domesticity and middle age. So his character is formed before we’ve had a chance to ‘meet’ him through your own writing.

      I think you’re an English Literature graduate? I’m guessing 19th century/early 20th century novels were a big part of your study? You use the long sentences of that time, which gives your writing an interestingly stately cadence, mixed with a sharp wit. It’s refreshing to read and you wrestle the words to your will pretty well. By the way – have you read Saki or Chesterton?

        A good tip about using my husband’s initial to name him, that’s yet another choice. I didn’t use his name mostly so that first-time readers wouldn’t have to wonder if it’s my friend, sibling, husband or what. But the image of him that you conjure is perfect, that’s precisely what I wanted you to imagine — a middle-aged homely man 🙂

        Well, you got me. It’s not so great to hear that my reading of Victorian literature left its marks on me — it doesn’t surprise me though. I consciously force myself to write shorter sentences, but it looks it’s not working out too well so far. Sure, my bedtime reading is Austen, the Brontes, Thackeray and whatnot. Not Saki, though. Shame on me!

    2. I really enjoyed reading that post. I liked the way you wove your own stories in order to personalize your points. I agree that people really need to check their own attitude about weight. You can be healthy without being skinny.

      One suggestion — you might consider adding boldface headers to break up the ideas in a longer post. It makes it seem a little less stream-of-consciousness and is easier to read onscreen.

    3. Good post. I’m (once again) shamed to recall the time a new girl started school in the 10th grade and before class I introduced her to the girls sitting around us. As I made my way around the circle, I hesitated every so briefly on the ‘fat’ girl and then moved on to the next person to introduce. In that split second my mind calculated that the new gal probably wasn’t interested in knowing Deb so I didn’t take include her.

      Fast forward several years later when I was crying my heart out in the bathroom where I worked (over a guy definitely NOT worth the anguish). Deb worked there as a janitor and I was humbled and chagrined at how gently she spoke to me, offering words of both encouragement and friendship.

      To say that I felt like the biggest jerk in the world would be an understatement. But I learned something that day and I now know the importance of not judging a book by its proverbial cover.

      Anyway, your post reminded me of that and for what it’s worth I wanted to share my story with you. Not really a commentary on your post or a feedback offering. Shrug. Maybe just a way for me to do penance for the way I most certainly hurt someone who did nothing to deserve such treatment.

    6. Wow, wow and WOW. From a purely literal perspective, I so relate to this. I’m hesitant to admit this but I am always picking away at my scabs and sores which makes it hard for them to heal or leaving marks once they do. I don’t know if this is what you refer to here or not but I’m embarrassed to say it is somehow satisfying and yes, I know, very weird. I, too, know not what I’m really searching for…

      Then again perhaps this is simply metaphor for something transcendent, something deeper. In which case I’m feeling pretty stupid for making such a public proclamation! 🙂

You not only relay information but by including your own emotions and reactions grant a certain dignity befitting the import of what you’re describing.     2. I really like your blog! It really made me want to go to New Orleans (not that I wasn’t longing to already). The pictures are great and really drew me in in a way few other blogs I’ve read recently had. You have concocted perfect escapism here, well done! I don’t know what would stop people engaging. Perhaps you need to interact with others more? Maybe phrase your post titles as open ended questions, or begin with an open ended question and then provide your answer in the rest of the post. People like to talk about themselves rather than others, so encouraging people to answer questions is way easier than making them ask!

      To answer your question: I think you could engage readers if you gave them a specific question to answer in your posts. This could be achieved through an embedded poll (Which new adventure should I try next?) or the title itself: “If you could be anywhere on Earth right now, where would it be?” It sounds obvious, but I think people really want to chime in with their own thoughts, and an invitation helps.

    4. New blogger here, I enjoyed that read about your time in NOLA. I lived there briefly in the early 90’s and just recently returned a couple years ago for my honeymoon. You captured it nicely. Do spend more time outside of The French Quarter next time and yet more layers will be revealed to you. You picked up a new follower here!

    5. I feel a little out-gunned since I have way less followers than you, but my suggestion was something someone else here noted: End your post with a specific question. I’ve also had some success by creating a poll and by asking others to share a similar experience to the one I described. hope it helps

    2. Hi Priya. I read your post. All I can offer are the opinions of someone with a very short attention span (especially in Community Pool). You might want to condense things a bit–streamline your word usage to get the points (which were very good) across in the most economical way so that people like me will stay and look around. I must say, your about page is one of the most comprehensive I’ve seen yet and that definitely draws potential readers

    1. Others’ opinions might vary; personally, I think getting started with publishing posts is the most important thing to do when you start out; tweaking your design and layout is something you can always do, and it doesn’t have to all happen at once.

      1. You’ve got too much here to do on wordpress. So stop thinking about the layout and design for now. As Ben pointed out, you could always keep on experimenting with it whenever you want. Start posting. Start reading and interacting. Follow others and do some challenges.

    2. Welcome to wordpress (: I’ma bit of a newbie too, with not much more experience. But from what I have learned, the design and layout in the beginning don’t matter so much. After a while, you get a focus on your blog and a feel for what you like, and you’ll change it up a bit to fit your liking. Don’t worry about the aesthetics quite yet! Good luck~ 🙂

Good subject, but one is definitely the max number of ironic hashtags you can have in a post…also, exclaim a little less (too much ‘?!’) and be aware of using a string of unecessary words all together “simply them just not connecting” would make as much sense with only one of the first three words and would be less clunky to read. Otherwise, your writing has a good pace and is easy to read. Good luck with the blog!

    1. Took a look. That’s some pretty powerful information but seems in line with your stated purpose of the blog. You might want to add some graphics to augment your text. Also be sure to check your grammar. Hope this is helpful

You have some great imagery in both words and pictures (that’s a lot of underwater photos 🙂 and some deep thoughts for a young person. i have a very different style blog (travel humor) but I’ve been known to do some creative writing and can tell quality work when i see it. i saw it

Having blogged for the past three months I am starting to get a bit of an increase in traffic and feel my little page on the internet could do with a makeover but am a bit scared by wordpress.org. What are people’s experiences? Is it worth doing?       1. I enjoyed it enough to read the whole post!! If I have any suggestion it would be to check punctuation – especially because you have some very long sentences. I enjoy the casual conversation style of writing though very much. It was just hard getting the tempo of your thoughts sometimes because of the length of sentences/punctuation thing. I would definitely read more!

    2. To the happy woman ( I speak Italian, obviously) I enjoyed your post and got a chuckle at the mild racial slur in the title. Since my wife makes an incredible “WOP” sauce I have trouble relating but nothing brings a family together like stewed tomatoes

    I’ve an interesting question to ask WordPress users (not self-hosted); what happens if your storage space runs out? Are you going to buy more storage space or start a new blog?

    I would love to hear your feedback on my blog’s layout; to be more specific I am curious if it is user friendly in terms of navigating yourself around the blog (e.g. search bar, archives, etc.). It would mean a lot to me as a starter to get some insights if this is something that might put off people, if so, then I go go though some changes.

      1. I agree with @Takeshi – the layout is super clean and ‘simple’ but has an elegant feel to it. The icons at the bottom are a little confusing – because there are several that are identical but link to different things (categories all have the WP logo) but other than that it was very intuitive. I’m now following you on IG!

    2. The lay-out is simple but looks elegant because of your posts. My advice is that don’t overdo everything.

    3. I think your theme was very well suited to the topic. Put your social media icons in a more prominent position if you can so that we can follow you everywhere. Not sure all of the images were needed and you could put the text together so there was less scrolling on the iPad.
      Good advice on the brushes. Love the oven mitt trick.

    4. I think your blog colors and layout is great, and the graphics well reflect the fashion theme of your blog. scrolling to the end was a bit tedious to find the older posts but if you set the limit of posts on a page you can avoid anyone having to do the “scroll of death”

    1. Interesting topic that I’s sure you can find an audience for. I would recommend you build some content. An about page, an email page for more info and additional blog posts.
      Secondly, get connected. Twitter is a great place to start. Build a profile and they will come. Good luck!

    2. Hi I agree with Iadonnacontenta your blog has an interesting topic but it needs more pictures of the actual work that you’ve done. You should also check the spelling since I found one or two misspelled words just by browsing. Good luck!

    3. I agree you need pictures and lots of them! Since you have your entry titles showing up as a list, what about changing themes to “Untitled?” Your set-up would be the same and it requires the pictures that show up as a header for each post. Check it to see what you think. Take a look at this to see how your topics might show up in this theme if it had pictures:

    4. Hi – I agree with Beth and Dyra and Ladonnacontenta – more photos would be great. Especially if there were tempting pictures by the titles. I’d have loved to see more photos in the posts too.

      Are you using i instead of I as a stylistic thing? Like ee cummings?
