If you could change how schools work…

Topic #266:

If you could change how schools work, what would you change? What is wrong with how public education for kids is structured? What works well? What specific things about school do you remember, good and bad?

  1. Well, schools education system is really good because they teach new things, the use the saying ‘If we teach today’s students, what we learnt yesterday, we’d rob them of tomorrow’ But bullying is common in schools, which isn’t good at all!

    1. It’s undeniably true that bullying is extremely common in schools, but I think much of it could be solved if schools would just ATTEMPT to do something.

  2. The school system should be overhauled completely. First ask yourself why do we want to educate people. First , so they will be able to have a job and enter into society as a contributor in the community A). teach them a skill which will enble them to take care of themselves and their family comfortably. Teach them how to think critically and be able to solve problems and know the difference of right and wrong. Teach them how to survive in the world educating them with the fundamentals of reading, writing and arithmetic.

possible with natural methods, such as learning in the environment so as not to get bored in a closed room and learning more questions and answers

  4. More languages and travel packages for students. Doing an exchange and learning a new language during my courses is the best thing I did in University. It expanded my perspective on culture, people, and society. I study Architecture in Uni, and I always consider those three things mentioned as a massive influence on how I produce my ideas and design.

  5. yes. We need to challenge our youth. Challenge their mind and body. Just think of ourselves at our current old age…don’t you feel bottled up in a cubicle sitting there for 3 hours at a time? Think of the spirited child who laughs at the smallest things, wants to run and play, chase birds and rainbows who has to have P.E. on a hot, concrete pad with no nature in sight. ugh.

  6. If it is a public primary/secondary education we are talking here I strongly proposed that teachers will really impart to their students the real meat of the matter. That means, they have to give more real life hands-on exercises, alignment of the curriculum as to what the industry requires, and more focus on the real meaning of being a teacher – teaching is supposedly a passion/vocation not just a mere profession. Teachers should teach their students for the love of it, not just for money. Some public school teachers are doing this job because of the pay they get from it yet they don’t like the job. Is that teaching? Sounds like a Prostitute to me. Sorry for that. But a prostitute is someone who works for the money and I’m sure all prostitute don’t love their job they just love the money. We teachers are not prostitutes. There are also some teachers who really love the brighter students but abandon their weaker students. What is that? Do you call that teaching. I believe not! I have these experiences in my old days in primary and secondary school. And I don’t want the same thing happen to my students. FYI, I am also a teacher (in college). I rather be called a teacher than be called professor. 🙂

    1. Good comments. Here is my reply.
You SHOULD teach because you love it and I SHOULD be a Soldier because I love it, but that is not always reality. My philosophy is that all jobs eventually suck. You can’t do the same thing day after day and love it every day. If we had a socialist society, and everyone got paid the same maybe we could do our job because we love it. When the bills come in, everyone works for a paycheck.
The answer, for me is not that I LOVE being a Soldier — many days I don’t even like it — but I know the purpose for it. Not just platitudes about serving my country, but because my job cotributes to readiness and wellfare of other Soldiers. But anyone who pretends that their own welfare and that of their family is not why they do what they do is lying either to themselves or you.
I don’t imagine (especially in this day and age) that being a teacher is that much different from being an average Soldier or NCO. You can do a thing because it is good even if you don’t like it every day. You can do a thing that is good even if you would not willingly do it for free. As long as you are doing the best job you physically can it is irrelevant if you do it while waiting eagerly for payday or brcause you love it.
My two cents. Can I get credit for this paper, professor? 😛

      1. I did not see that coming. I could have had agreed with your strong points Sir. But you see, have different perspectives here… I have a choice. I can choose to leave teaching if I feel I don’t love it. I could find better jobs anyway, with higher salary aside from teaching but I didn’t. Same is true with teachers who would like to burden themselves day after day after day of their lives with their job because they still insist to fit in even they are not meant to be there. If they don’t like it, Quit! Look for other jobs where they can be happy and get a better salary. But on the lighter side, we may share the same sentiment if I say I don’t care if you don’t like the job, as long as you give better service. Now, receiving your salary during payday and not being productive that’s a different story. As you can see, we wanted to prepare students in here, and how could we do that if we just go in school, receive the salary yet have not teach? And one thing I didn’t pass the standard to be called a Professor. hehehe… 🙂
For that thought provoking reply, Sir, yes, sir! I give you an A+. 😉

  7. If I could change how schools work I would take a more fundamental approach to education, one that incorporates and takes into consideration more of the basic developmental process that children go through. I think that schools today put far too much pressure on children, and that the system of education lacks both inspiration and creativity. Children need stimulation, physical activity and the opportunity to explore their individuality. I would institute a curriculum that included ethics, experience of nature and the outdoors, a more practical approach to learning. The chance to study abroad, exchanges and generally a wider perspective of the world. Children need to be taught the importance of self responsibility, and altogether have the inclination to make a difference in the world, and to be able to grow up into mature and intelligent adults.

  8. A la llamada “Escuela Clásica” sólo le añadiría: Darle confianza al aprendiz asistente, y respetar cada creatividad. Orientación con naturalidad, ¡No! con imposiciones. Motivarlos a descubrir y no a memorizar solamente.

  9. Well… There should be more variety in the subjects. There should be a lot less homework and tests, I mean students need a life too. And the teachers should find a way to keep their students interested.

  10. Hi Scott, I was going to a post on this topic but it was only a couple of day’s ago I did a “School” post and as I read this title my blood pressure escelated as I have some very sensitive issues and passion in the negative sense of what is wrong with our schools today. Along with what needs to change and be done differently and what needs to be introduced. I may come back to this and do a post on it when I’m not so tetchy. A good prompt btw !!
