Ok here we go – starting early to give you a head start.
We’ll be posting ideas you can post about. These are optional. If you don’t like one, that’s fine. Post something else. Or post about why you don’t like this topic, or the topic you wish we’d mentioned here. It’s s all good.
Here’s the first topic idea of 2011, brought to you by Plinky:
List three countries you’d like to visit, and why you want to go.
Or if you don’t want to go anywhere ever, explain why.
And if our suggestion doesn’t quite fit your blog’s general topic (e.g. Your blog is about hyperactive dancing miniature french poodles that only eat swiss cheese), that’s ok. Simply ask “What are the three most interesting countries or places related to my blog? And why are they important to you?”
(Reminder: Do not answer this in the comments. That would be very silly. You should grab this topic and write a post about it on your blog).
Currently blogless? You’re a click away from sharing your story.

Yep, i think this is a great idea… maybe tomorrow… yes. Gonna make a post about it. Thanks.

Hang on – this is not going to work for me, and I suggest many other bloggers. I simply cannot do that sort of thing on my blog.
I really don’t think set topics are the way to go (reduces the range of topics being blogged about) anyway. Surely we want diversity and the largest range possible?
Certainly for those struggling for a topic, go for it. But one of the top recommendations for blogging is for a blog to have a focus (and mine sure does). Moving away from the focus for a competition is surely not sensible? The tag, is OK: changing primary blog focus I have a problem with.
Sorry! 🙂

Team Oyeniyi: Did you read the second sentence? Here’s what it says:
These topics are entirely optional and meant as fodder. Use them, don’t use them. It’s all fine and dandy.
Given the zillions of kinds of blogs, there’s no way every topic offered here will work for everyone, even if we tried.

hi:
I agree the topics are random, and I think there should be a General topic, which gives you more latitude to Blog… I think blogging is informative, Fun and important in our Society!

Great idea, and since my blog is my writing Journal, I will post my answer, pretty much the only way I know how…. Creatively, beit a poem or a prose short story. I hope a ton of peeps join in! Thanks, Denise

I agree with Team Oyeniyi. This would detrimentally change the whole dynamic of both my blog content and readership.

And away we go! Thanks for the early start. I was hoping you’d post it today rather than waiting until tomorrow for those of us (me!) who have to let it percolate. It’s not quite “on topic” for my blog, but hey, I’m a writer … that involves creative thinking. Oui!
Good luck everyone, and Happy new year!

Of course you can write more than just one post and sure you can just write “off topic” – main thing is, to do it every day in 2011.
p.s – happy 2011, it’s has just arrived in North Europe!

H: Indeed – there are no rules about what you post. Can be photos, poems, screeds, manifestos, movies, or some form not yet invented.

Thanks H! I read this paragraph: “And if our suggestion doesn’t quite fit your blog’s general topic (e.g. Your blog is about hyperactive dancing miniature french poodles that only eat swiss cheese), that’s ok. Simply ask “What are the three most interesting countries or places related to my blog? And why are they important to you?”” which implied we had to at least mention the topic of the day! Maybe WordPress updated this post? 🙂 🙂 I don’t recall seeing the word “optional” when I first posted, but I’ll agree I had just got out of bed, so anything is possible!

Team Oyeniyi, like you, I believe this will be a great boost for bloggers that need content ideas. If I had a freeform blog, this would be just what I was looking for. In addition to the freeform blog format, I see this as a great tool for establishing a new blog focus; trying out ideas and finding what works.
I would like to see an alternative program (or a Program B) that directly relates to established blog themes/formats/content type.

That’s a good idea Todd. I also agree this is a great way to help people establish their blogging habit and develop technique. My habit is OTT, I think – my technique may not be so good! 🙂
Mind you, I’m not sure how they would manage program B – after all trying to compare established by wildly different blogs could be difficult.
By the way – what are we competing to win, just out of curiosity? I think I missed that somewhere along the line!

I know this will be quite a challenge for me and I have already scheduled my first blog post tomorrow as well as have added two more today. I am grateful for the challenge as it tends to get the creative juices flowing where they have previously run dry.

This idea is awesome! I have tried to post every day before, and it’s hard especially since I am a picky blogger, and then I second guess everything I post and never hit Publish. But I am willing to try this.

My thinking was that people could sign up for certain topics and content style (aphorisms, poetry, etc). However, that would likely involve establishing new divisions of Word Press; something similar to, or modeled after, Food Press. Of course, this would be permanent, not just a temporary program for boosting blog productivity.
Regarding the competition bit, I must have missed that also.

I like the idea about a Food Blog: Since I am a Chef. For 2011 I just finished creating a whole menu of Mini’s Food’s. Everything from Lasagna, Doughnuts,
Cakes, breads, cupcakes, etc. check out my web site. The whole point was to give people back their freedoms to choose a good food but keep the portion size smaller, allowing them to enjoy food again responsibly!

I just started my blog the day before Thanksgiving on a whim and am game for the challenge. I keep a little spiral notebook that I make a list of topics that I am going to write about. Often times I will start on one topic and it turns in to 2 or 3 other topics that I can divide up into separate posts. Will definitely check in for other ideas. Thank you for encouraging us!

I was under the impression that it’s a challenge, not a competition, with the challenge being entirely personal with no prizes involved.
That said, the sense of achievement I’d get from completing the challenge would be one heck of a prize for me 🙂

We may be over-thinking this, people. If you need a little jump-start for a topic, it’s here for you. If you, like me, just want the postaday2011 push as a reminder or goal but will be continuing to blog like you always have, great! I haven’t seen any hard and fast rules yet, and I’m assuming the people here at WordPress just want to give us an excuse to blog more.
Consider the challenge just a fire under your behind – you don’t have to roast what they suggest you do!

In my view, what I read from the idea is exactly what you have stated. While I have posted every day for around two years, my posts are a mixture of commentary, original articles and community service announcements.
Perhaps, I’ll see a topic which may help me write more original content.
Thanks WP for always offering more to your bloggers.

well put, Mary, that’s exactly how I read it, too: a nudge, a poke, an inspiration rather than as a rule strictly adhered to. I interpreted ‘challenge’ in a much looser context than some of the previous comments but also as a ‘dare’ for keeping active or becoming more so.
Now the trick is, for me, to actually get started! I’ve been away from blogging for about 2 years and this challenge is indeed an inspiration.

I love this idea as my guess is most topics will provide ideas that are generally appealling and relatable. So what if many people are writing about the same thing? We will all add our personal flair. Perfect for casual writers like me who just need a push to get going on posts.

Its good to have suggestions like this, will help create new blog ideas. Since someone above was asking about the incentives to write, it would be better if someone from WP goes through all the posts written on this topic, and summarize it through a post (perhaps by giving quotes from blogger posts) with the best write up’s/ ideas/ posts on a particular topic. That would be a good incentive as people would compete to get featured on it.
