New Tools for More Successful Editing Adventures
Spacing in Galleries
You now have the power to control how much space lives between your images at the horizontal and vertical level. This allows you to create a variety ways to present a collection of photos. You can even eliminate all of the space to give it a collage effect.
Lock Those Blocks
Have you ever accidentally messed up a block or pattern? While there’s always some comfort in knowing you can “undo” most accidents, there’s a new/better way to prevent them from happening in the first place.
You can now lock blocks from within the editor or the list view. This makes it easier than ever to protect components, sections, or even full layouts.
Within locking you can choose to prevent them from being moved or to prevent them from being removed. You can also look forward to the ability to lock “inner blocks” which would make it easier to lock any number of blocks you have set up within a layout block like the group, row, or stack blocks.
Did You Notice the Table of Contents on This Post?
That’s right, it’s finally here. The table of contents block automatically updates as you edit your content, giving your users a direct path to the content they are most interested in.
What other features have you discovered that make creating and editing content easier for you? Share your tips and tricks in the comments.

Extra tip for adjusting the spacing value:
Of course, you can type the value into the box and hit enter. But did you know you can also click and hold inside the box and while holding the click, moving the mouse up and down automatically changes the value?
A handy little tip when you are not sure how much you would need.

You’ll only see it when using the Site Editor: https://wordpress.com/support/site-editor/.

I discovered the ToC a month or two ago and it has been awesome! Next, we need a way to integrate estimated reading time into articles 🙂

I don’t use gallery blocks. I just place my photos in-line down a blog post (hey that’s just me lol). But nice to know the spacing feature is there if I ever do decide to try it out. Definitely going to have to try out the lock feature. My favorite feature though is the TOC. I’m guessing it works based off header blocks within your blog posts. Definitely going to have to give that one a try. Thanks for these updates.

Hi, I am on WordPress.com Business. Do I need to activate Gutenberg for this Table of Content to work?

No, it should work in the standard Block Editor. If you have trouble, make sure you reach out to support and they can walk you through it: https://wordpress.com/help/contact

Now you’ve introduced a Table Of Content block (and thank you for that), are there any plans to introduce a ‘wrapping/summing up’ block which can be placed at the end of each blog post?

It sounds like you could use the Reusable Block for that: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/reusable-block/.

I already use reusuable blocks, but I’d like a summing up block that can be changed per post.

Something like that would be difficult to automate since different people have different ideas of what a summary would look like.
You could create a reusable block to be your template for the summary; you can set a layout and some filler content that fits the format you’re looking for.
Then, once you insert your reusable template to your post, you can convert it to a regular block so you can edit the content specifically for the post you’re working on:

Hope that helps!
