Celebrating Black History Month
This February, we shared stories of notable Black/African Descent people around the world.
For much of Black history in the US, a lot of stories have gone untold. As we wrap up Black History Month, our team at Automattic — the company behind WordPress.com — wanted to share how we celebrated with our fellow colleagues. Throughout February, our Black/African Descent employee resource group, Cocoamattic, shined a light on some of these untold stories.
Each week this month, we shared infographics highlighting notable Black/African Descent people from around the world, from inventors and pioneers to Black-first and culture influencers.
Join us in celebrating 21 heroes.

Although it’ll take one more email for you to see this, you can block all emails entirely with the link at the bottom of every email. You can also manage notifications here if you’d like to keep some subscriptions and end others:

Thank you, Shanta, and since Americans have been supportive of Black History Month for years, we hope the black community will return the favor by celebrating and respecting Women’s History Month, which is March, and begins tomorrow!
So much has been said and sung of beautiful young girls. Why doesn’t somebody wake up to the beauty of old women? -Harriet Beecher Stowe

I’m enjoying this now and really love the insights being well thought out in their brevity of words. Facts and wonderful way to remember and celebrate our roots- no matter where from. So far I’ve enjoyed learning more about Wilfredo Lam. As an Artist myself, he is one of the Artists I admire and have researched. Great inspiration from all shared here! Thank you.

It is said that history is written by those who win. This is wrong, history is written by those who endure the terrors and oppression and then go on to be productive. I am a retired white professor who studies, taught, and lve the history of my black brothers and sisters.

The story of Black History Month begins in 1915, half a century after the Thirteenth Amendment abolished slavery in the United States. Since 1976, every American president has designated February as Black History Month and endorsed a specific theme and Black History Month 2022 Theme is “Black Health and Wellness”
Thanks WordPress!

I was well aware of the Fuller Brush company and how it started the door to door sales revolution but never knew it was owned by a Black person.
“We’re Beatrice” was a slogan at the end of commercials on some of our most commonly used products such as Wesson oil. Only now do I find out that it was part of a Black owned multinational.
Thank you so much!

I remember “We’re Beatrice” from way back when. Seemed like it came out of nowhere and then just disappeared.
