New Twitter “Tweet Button”
For those of you who have been dreaming of an easier way for your readers to share your posts on Twitter, that day has come. We’re pleased to announce that we’ve added an official Tweet Button as an option for all WordPress.com blogs.
How it works: When one of your readers hits the Tweet Button, they will be shown a popup that includes a shortened link to your post. Readers can add in a quick message, and then hit “Tweet” to send the post to their Twitter feed as a tweet — all without leaving your blog.
Additionally, each time a reader tweets your post, you’ll know it: The tool keeps a live tally of tweets, so you’re never in the dark about how your blog posts are performing in the Twittersphere.
To enable the button on your blog please visit the “Appearance > Extras” menu and select the “Show a Twitter Tweet Button on my posts” option.
Update:
We have moved the Twitter Tweet button into Settings > Sharing. You can read more about this move here.

Andy et al, as WordPress.com seems to be introducing more and more social media buttons (“Watch This Space!), it would be awesome that where they appear in our chosen theme would be taken into consideration as well. Having one button “up there” and another one “over there” stresses out my design sensibilities.
Just some spicy BBQ wings for thought. 🙂

Thanks for this. I’m looking forward to what comes for those of us with self installed wordpress.org software on our sites.
Seems something’s coming soon ( https://wordpress.com/blog/2010/08/12/new-tweet-button/#comment-101227 ).
The other thing I was wondering about was the ability to tweet comments? I know that if I was to post on a blog, there could be instances where I want to specifically share my comment on the post. Not sure if something like that could ever be created though w/ the way hashtags are used for a specific comment (I’m assuming shortening it might ignore it?)
Also:
1) Looking forward to it for pages ( https://wordpress.com/blog/2010/08/12/new-tweet-button/#comment-101217 )
2) Thanks for the info for publicize ( https://wordpress.com/blog/2010/08/12/new-tweet-button/#comment-101212 ) , but seems I can’t use this if I have a self-installed wordpress.org blog?

Hey Andy,
I’m unable to see the button on my blog http://www.blogstar.com.mx
I’ve changed the language to English since I couldn’t see the Extra menu in Appearance on the Dashboard in Spanish.
Is there anything else I need to do?
Cheers,

Not sure if this question has been asked (I haven’t scrolled through the previous 224 comments)…
The Tweet button is only visible when someone clicks a particular post on my blog. However, when they simply arrive on my blog via my home page [http://jcrylequotes.com/], the Tweet button is NOT visible. Is this how it is SUPPOSED to be?
Also…please, I beg you, provide us with a Facebook share button. THAT would be THE BIGGEST cause of celebration in WordPress history. 😉

Hi there!
Great feature indeed!
To me next step would be a kind of column in the Posts page counting how many Tweets your post has had so far. Well, just something similar to the columns counting Comments and Likes!
Thanks again,
Floriano.

Though would have been much nicer and impacting if the button is placed at the beginning of the post so readers know right away that they can tweet it…

But I have enabled it over the past 2 hours and it is still not showing… any reason for that?
Or is it going to take effect on new posts instead?

By default, the buttons are shown on individual posts only. To show the them on your home page and archive pages, you need to change the setting at the end of Sharing options panel. Select “Posts and index pages” dropdown option next to “Show sharing buttons on”.

Suggestion: I think it would be great if the tweet button showed up in the same place as the “like” button when both are turned on. It is kinda funky to have them in separate spots when both are on.

This is an awesome way to connect and network with others!

Suggestion: How about we add a column to the ‘posts’ page with the header ‘tweets.’ This way, we can see in the table on the posts page the number of tweets for each page comparatively (along with the # of likes, # of comments, etc.)

Excellent.
You should evaluate adding some stats for the blog admin, to see the most «twitted» posts and so on, maybe with an optional widget.
Count my vote for a facebook and other social networks buttons too.

Thanks a lot for this, a lot of my traffic comes through Twitter and Facebook so I appreciate these extras. How about the option to actually include a range of social bookmarklets, not just Facebook and Twitter? It would be cool if people could choose to allow the option to submit to Reddit, Digg etc along with StumbleUpon and email. AFAIK you can do this by manually inserting code into each post but that’s pretty cumbersome. I love my WP.com account so please make it happen! Thanks again 🙂

thanks! what about for those of us that post on our main page and people don’t need to click into the posts in order to read them? (see my blog for example : http://photothought.com/ )
in other words, my posts just hang out on the main page for everyone to read. Is it possible to add “tweet” and “facebook like” buttons on the main page at the side of each post?
that would be fantastic!

Well I turned on the Twitter Button under Appearance/Extras, but I’m not seeing it? Would also like to know how to turn on the “Like” button as well. I’ve managed to turn on the “Rate this” with the stars, but that’s about it. Advice would be welcome, thank you :o)

Thanks for the new feature. I have enabled it.
Sorry if this is a newbie question, but I noticed the Tweet button doesn’t appear after articles displayed on my homepage. It only appears if I open the article itself. The “Rate This” buttons on the other hand appear in both places.
Is that the behavior I should be expecting on the Tweet button?
If not, could it be a problem with the theme I am using?
