Important notices regarding software updates

We want to give you a heads up that WordPress is a dynamic, open source software that loves to keep us all on our toes with updates. These updates can bring changes to how things look and work, and from time to time there might be some differences you come across in our lessons. But fear not! We’re fully committed to keeping updated.

In case you spot any discrepancies or have questions, as our students and valued partners, we encourage you to reach out to us in our Education Community Forum. Your feedback is essential in helping us stay in sync with the latest developments. We’ll do our best to address any concerns promptly, providing guidance or updates as needed. Together, we’re on a mission to ensure your learning experience is smooth and enjoyable! Thank you for understanding and collaborating with us on this exciting journey.

While we’re working hard to complete updates to the courses as well, sometimes there will be time delays between when a feature changes and when we’re able to update course materials.

This page will serve to highlight any changes that may have taken place since we published certain course materials, that we have not yet been able to update in the course materials.

Content block

One of the most important blocks when it comes to templates is the one called “Content”. Previously, this block was called “Post Content”, which understandably caused a fair amount of confusion. That’s why this block, along with a few others, have been renamed to remove the word “Post”. Because the blocks formerly known as: Post Content, Post Title, Post Featured Image, Post Excerpt, and many more, are also applicable to “Pages”.

You may encounter situations where you still reference to their former names — in your own site or in screenshots and videos. These are all the same blocks, they do the same things they’ve always done, we’ve just removed the word “Post” from the name to remove confusion on what they’re used for.

Add new site screens

When you’re creating a new site, there are a series of screens that you’ll be presented with. These screens may change from time to time. The best option is to read through and follow the onscreen prompts.

Settings icon and sidebar

The Settings icon is bound to show up in videos and screenshots, especially when it’s not the focus of materials. Previously the settings icon was a gear or cog. It is now a new image that looks more like a wireframe of a webpage that has a sidebar. It’s located in the same place in the top right corner of your editor and hovering over it will display a label of “Settings”.

In addition to this icon change, you’ll also notice that there have been some changes within the Settings sidebar as well. This one is trickier because many blocks will have various changes to this section, and it is constantly evolving as new features and options are added, so be sure to explore if anything isn’t an exact match.

One notable change is that many blocks may now have more than one tab. The following screen recording has no audio.
