Why Are View Counts Showing In Stats On My New Private Blog?
-
Hi!
I launched a new blog yesterday to be used as a PRIVATE organizing tool for other websites I own on wordpress.com and other projects.
I thought it would be nice to have a personal private place in blog/website form on WordPress to function as a “second brain” of sorts, and that could be used to store text information like copy/paste tweets for Twitter, and various lists to keep track of things, but where no one but me can access the information.
So I have set the blog to Private in the General settings, and by using Chrome browser on my phone which is not signed into my WordPress account, I verified that the blog is showing as private to anyone not signed into it, and it could not be seen.
I normally use Firefox both on my phone, and on my Windows laptop which stays signed into my WordPress account for the obvious reason of always being readily attached to my websites when I need to get to them in a hurry for something I might not be able to do in the Jetpack app while on the go, and I do 99% of my website work on my laptop. I have been adding pages and writing to this new blog all evening since acquiring the url.
So after spending time working on setting up the blog, I have checked the Stats and it’s showing 80+ views as of this post in the forum.
I am planning on adding a custom .com to the blog at some point in the future only for vanity purpose since it is intended as a private blog, and for the extra features of having more storage for photos. Basically I intend to use this site as a WordPress version of Notion and/or Taskade.
It is concerning to me however that I am seeing these view counts when the blog is supposed to be private and after verifying that it is showing private if not signed in.
So I have this question before I decide to spend money on upgrading this private blog with a custom domain. Are the Stats counting only my personal usage while I am viewing it after editing posts and pages?
I probably just answered my own question lol, but wanted to verify that to be the case.
(Note: the blog I selected for the “Site you need help with” is the not the blog I’m referring to for help. I didn’t want to mention the new blog I just launched since I’m trying to keep it private.)
Thank you for your help!

Hi there,
Are the Stats counting only my personal usage while I am viewing it after editing posts and pages?
Good question, and one that is understandable since you want to ensure that no one outside of yourself can view your site. But, yes, the stat numbers that you are seeing are from your own personal views or views from any other person who has logged-in permissions to your site:
If your site is set to private, views by you and other logged-in members of your site are counted.
Jetpack Stats and Insights includes a bunch of nifty graphs, charts, and data to show you how many visits your site gets, which posts and pages are the most popular, and much more. This guide explains how to read and understand your site’s stats and insights. Video Overview Video Transcript Hi everyone; it’s Mike Bal from WordPress.com. Today we’re gonna dive in and look at site staHowever, if you begin to see anything out of the ordinary (i.e., seeing the number of views consistently going up even when you’re not even visiting/viewing the site), let us know, and we’d be happy to look into this.
Thanks!
