it’s like a snail without a house on it. um kiddin’
What I understand is that it’s some tagline that is given to a category or a page so that those get a proper URL. But I’m a newbie, so

Might help if we knew what you’re looking at.
Only “slug” I can find is the label “Post slug” in the ‘Write Post’ page. Try clicking on it while editing a post. You’ll notice that it matches up with the URL of your post. It is editable but not that any characters that WP doesn’t like will be stripped from it.
It’s not something you need to worry about unless you need to fix spelling or something within your post title after you publish a post.
Good luck,

The above link explains slugs for catagories only.
Each entry you publish also has a slug that is made up from the title you have on that entry. You can change the slug to something different than your posts title. That is an advantage with long titles.
Say your posts title is: “zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz”
As a result the url for that post would be yoursite.wordpress.com/zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz”
In addition the trackback url for that post would have “trackback” added to that already long url.
BUT, by changing the post slug on the same post to something shorter, say “zzz,” your published/displayed title retains the original title but the permalink uses “zzz” and so will the trackback url.
