Want a website/store
-
I have been blogging on wp.com for years and recently decided to turn my hobby into a business. I purchased a mydomain.com and am ready to start designing my website/store and am trying to decide what is the best way to go.
I see lots of great plug -ins for .org, will these work with .com as well? or do I need to switch? If only some work with .com how do I know which ones?
My goals: I want to create a digital scrapbooking site, that includes a blog, a store with instant purchase and access to downloads, as well as a members only area. I may also want a gallery (for myself and users) and/or forum.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Let me save you a great deal of time: You can’t do ecommerce at WordPress.com at all, therefore you need paid hosting and software from WordPress.ORG to start with and go from there.

While raincoaster is right about ecommerce, you can use your WPcom site and then link to external shops/forums using a Custom Menu. http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/
Also, here’s a link to a digi-scrapping site I follow. Perhaps you’ll find some site setup ideas there. http://scrapbookideas.wordpress.com/

Yes, you can do that, but the SEO benefits of having all your content in one place outweigh the ability to host the blog portion here, at least in my mind.

Yep. Media files as you know always have the wordpress.com domain; with a .org site, the media files have your OWN domain. It’s a BIG DEAL.

In addition, it should be noted that .com WordPress blogs cannot use plugins. If you want plugins and a store, you may need to consider self-hosting your blog (meaning, taking the .org) route.

Great thanks Monkey, that is what I thought, but I had several people telling me plugins would work on .com and they got me to thinking I was mistaken. Thanks for clearing that up.
