View Counter is Malfunctioning in my WordPress.com Site

I own a free site, where I publish blogs. For the past 2 weeks (or more), my view counter is messed up and I’m not seeing any active views, but likes and follows. How is it possible for a reader to follow and like, when he/she had not visited a site? Is that because, I turned on post-by-email feature for my followers? Even though, how is it possible for a random reader to follow my site without actually visiting it?

Are you referring to https://spacestrek.wordpress.com/?

It is possible to follow a site via the reader and not the site. The stats panel shows visitors to the site.
