Very, very simple tutorial or video on block editor

  • Unknown's avatar

I’ve used my WordPress.com personal site for more than 12 years and always used the classic editor. My site has six pages and most of it is text with some pictures. I want to learn to do my 500-1,200 word blog posts with the block editor.

I see there is a “classic” option when you + a block. That could be all I need. Do you think it will be around for a long time? Can I add pictures with this, too?

My main question is, can anyone point me to a very, very simple tutorial or video that explains how to post with the block editor. I’ve tried before but get stymied trying to insert a long text in the first editing block. Thanks

P.S. The link above that says “How can I learn block editor” doesn’t work.

Hi there, kudos for the initiative! One quick question, though. Are you starting a new site using a block theme, or continuing to post on your current site which is using a retired theme?

First, thanks so much for your reply.

    Retired theme?

Do I need a new theme to use the block editor? If I could use the classic editor for the rest of my life, I would be happy. To do that I would have to upgrade my WordPress level so I could use the classic editor plug-in.

In the meantime, my previous question.

Hello again, retired meaning that it’s no longer available through WordPress.com to activate on a website. It was a Premium theme.

Since Photolia is a Classic theme and, unless it’s been updated to work with the Block editor, means you likely won’t get the full benefit of working with blocks.

The Classic block mimics the previous Classic Editor writing experience, but it does so in the Block Editor interface. To start using the Block Editor, whether with the Classic Block or Blocks in general, I’d suggest checking out this tutorial https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/add-content-blocks/ and there’s more on the Classic Block here https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/classic-block/

You can also try this out by creating a new test site, which will only have Block themes and the Block Editor available.

Also, do I understand correctly that the Classic Editor is no longer available to you? Your site has been around for quite some time (again, kudos) so, AFAIK, you should still be able to access it in the Posts and Pages dashboard.

At the top of those dashboards, you should see a menu “Add Post” and to the right of that a drop-down arrow where you can then choose either Block Editor or Classic Editor. Do you see this?

  • Hi there!

    A few reassuring points first:

    • The Classic block is meant specifically for people like you who wrote long posts in the Classic Editor.
    • Yes, you can absolutely add images inside the Classic block, just like before.
    • The Classic block isn’t going away anytime soon. WordPress knows many long-time writers rely on it, especially for text-heavy posts.

For learning resources, these are the least intimidating options:

Very basic guide (short and visual):

Classic block specifically (this is the key one for you):

Thanks so much Justjennifer and dhruvikmalaviya. Thanks JustJ for the background on my site theme. I started with a very basic WP site and a couple of years later bought the theme I have now because the site expanded and I wanted to improve the looks. I think I’ve had the site for 14-15 years.

Yes, the Classic Editor does appear as an option for my posts/blog page. Perhaps I’d forgotten about the option when I wanted to make changes in other pages. We’ve moved to another state over the past months and it’s taken me away from blogging.

So I will dive into the tutorials you linked for me and see where the classic blocks can take me while I get back to posting news and reviews about noir books and films.

    Best wishes !!

    Mark

  • Hi Mark,

You are very welcome. I am glad the background and links were helpful.

It sounds like you are on the right track now, and the Classic Editor option being available should give you flexibility as you ease back into posting.

If any questions come up while you explore the tutorials or make changes, feel free to start a new thread and we will be happy to help.

All the best, and welcome back to blogging.
