Very large (auto play) video file on the home page
-
Hello,
Please can one of you WordPress gurus comment on the following?
I’d like to replace my landing page sideshow, with a single video.
The idea is to have it auto play as soon as the visitor opens the home page.My concern is that the size of the video might slow the site down too much, or even break it.
The video is about 200MB – but I can’t really trim it down, because it shows a specific sequence of events. So ideally I’d like to keep the full length video.I considered using 3rd party applications (like YouTube) – but I don’t really want their logos on the video / home page.
Questions:
• Will a 200MB video cause things to go wrong on a WordPress site?
• Any other ideas as to how I could get this video on the home page? Thanks,
Daniel -
Hi Daniel –
Can you tell me which site you’re working on? Please share the address.
These themes support a video in the header area of the site: https://wordpress.com/themes/free/filter/feature:video
You’ll want to check the theme specs for specifics guidelines on the video size. Those are detailed near the bottom of the setup instructions.
Too large of a video will slow down your site.

Hi there.
Thanks for getting back to me so quickly.
The site I’m fiddling with is http://villagers.sausages.zulugraphix.co.ukNeedless to say, it’s still a work in progress – but if you scroll down a little, the home page slideshow is actually the one which will eventually be replaced with the huge ‘auto play’ video.
Rds,

Thank you for sharing the site address. villagers.sausages.zulugraphix.co.uk is not hosted with us at WordPress.com. For help with this you’re going to want to post at the self hosted WordPress community forums available at wordpress.org/support/
