Unreadable appearance of Gallery page after editing
-
I’ve just added some more images to the Gallery of my website and after updating, the images have been ‘compressed’/over-laid each other and written info appears in the background.
Message beside blocks: ‘This block contains unexpected or invalid content’.
Have attempted block recovery without success!
Cannot seem to access page history to revert to earlier version.
Looking at the page information – Document Outline – there’s a message against the recently added heading saying ‘incorrect heading level’. -

What is the URL of the post or page with the problem?
Also, which block type were you using?

Hi Macmanx,
Site: kenager.wordpress.com
Gallery page
I’d added a couple of new text blocks (as sub-headings) and then a new gallery block.
Everything looked OK until after I’d updated & published – when I went to view the site page, the whole Gallery page had been affected.
I managed to find a way back in to the ‘history’ of the page via ‘restore block’ and found an uncorrupted page view (created earlier this year), but on loading it and viewing it, it became corrupted.
I was going to try creating a new Gallery 2 page to add most recent images instead, but wasn’t sure whether to. If necessary, I could create brand new Gallery 1 and Gallery 2 pages to display images of my work, but this will obviously take some time. The original Gallery page could then be deleted.
I have made changes to the Exhibitions page (text only) on the site without problems.
Hope this all makes sense. Thank you for trying to sort this out,
Ken -
So that’s https://kenager.wordpress.com/home-2-2/ ?
I grabbed a screenshot of what I’m seeing in FF latest (temp screenshot) Is this what you are seeing as well?

Hi Justjennifer,
Couldn’t view temp screenshot . . .?
but clicking on URL it opens page of overlapping/incomplete or empty image frames with text behind (kenager.worpress . . .).

Staff – There’s another report in this thread https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/galleries-not-showing-up-right/#post-3584940

Thanks for letting me know – thought maybe I’d done something wrong or uploaded a bad image file (although they are all directly from my own camera and processed with MS software on my computer).
Should I wait until the issue is resolved before trying to add to/edit my own site?
Thanks.

Hi @kenager, we think we may have caught the issue. It seems to only affect cases where there’s a link in the caption.
In the meantime, if you want to try restoring to a working revision for now that will be okay.
– Open the post and go to Revisions.
– Use the slider to go back a couple of revisions (you can look at the time stamp at the top) until you’re at a point where the post was fine. You can restore that if you’d like.
Then, once we patch this issue you can go ahead and re-edit the post.

Hi Supernova,
I’ve tried that, but as soon as I preview/update/publish, the page displays incorrectly (please see my comments on 28th 09:50).
Am reluctant to go further back in case it corrupts other saved revisions.
Any idea how long the issue might take to fix, please?
-
Would you please try adding it again, but this time don’t change any captions?
We’re still working on this at https://github.com/Automattic/wp-calypso/issues/46813 but it appears that editing captions after adding the gallery is the cause of the problem so far.
-
Thank you macmanx.
I’ll have a look at this tomorrow when I’m a bit more awake.
Will start with a new gallery block (with images captioned in the media library first) at the top of my Gallery page to see what happens.
I haven’t include any links in my gallery blocks, but did add/edit/amend the captions after putting the images in the block.
