Unable to Crop Header Image
-
Hi,
I am trying to put in a new header image, but every single time I try to crop the new header image, it says “There has been an error cropping your image.” It won’t let me crop the image no matter what. I tried turning off blocker extensions in the browser (Firefox), but it still won’t let me crop. How can I be able to crop header images again like I used to?
Thank you very much.

@thecentifictionist – Were you able to get this sorted out? If not, let us know and we’ll try to help you get this working.

Hi,
Thank you very much, franxiscoflores1 and deancroyal, I appreciate the replies.
I ended up just going with the automatic way the image was cut off by the system when I uploaded it, without cropping it myself.
I didn’t try if it would crop the header in any different browser (yet). I also happened to accidentally find another way to crop the image within wordpress.com. By selecting the image on the media page and clicking edit.
Also it can be cropped on other image editing sites, but the inbuilt wordpress cropping tool was the best and the most convenient, it was great to be able to crop directly immediately there when uploading a new header image, it’s really too bad that that feature doesn’t function anymore. Wish it would be fixed.
Thank you very much.

We’d love to fix it. I’m wondering, was the original file very large? If you can upload it directly and send us a link, we’ll see if we can duplicate the issue to get it reported.

Also, here’s the link to the image on the Pexels site:

You’re welcome.
No, I had downloaded the image from its page on Pexels first, then uploaded it to my site.

hi,
by the way, if I try to change the header and crop the image on my test site, I get the error mentioned here on this topic.

Hello all,
I’ve taken a look at this issue and done a bit of a deep dive.
@thecentifictionist can you tell me if you were able to crop images previously using this particular theme? The reason why I ask is because it doesn’t looking cropping the header image is something that this theme can actually do.
I’ve cross referenced this with the demo and with a test site.
Granted it’s a bit of a strange user experience to have the cropping button there – so I’d like to check if this has definitely been possible thus far.
Many thanks in advance.

Hi,
I have done another test, I have installed/activated this particular theme and try to change the header image, it is changed without any problem: https://pacs212725806.files.wordpress.com/2021/04/screenshot-cropping-images-topic.png?resize=219%2C219
Maybe helps if you reinstall the theme.

Hi,
Yes, I previously was able to crop header images in this theme. This problem didn’t exist before.
I used to have a different computer, I had to get a new computer recently, so I don’t know if that would have anything to do with it.
-
If this appeared after getting the new computer that could be something. What computer and web browser are you using when the crop feature doesn’t work?
I also see earlier you mentioned you had not tried a different web browser. Would you be up for trying that when you have a little extra time? Perhaps Firefox or Google Chrome.
-
It should work on all computers and all browsers, though. I am using a Dell Inspiron and the Firefox browser. Before I had a Lenovo.
I can crop images after uploading by clicking on the image in the media page and clicking edit. Images can also be cropped on other image editing sites.

Thanks franxiscoflores1 & thecentifictionist. I just tested this on one of my sites. I was not able to duplicate it so far.
– I used google Chrome, nearly up to date (I’m updating it again tonight) on Mac (current)
– I activated Gateway on a test site
– I went to Customize (using the Calypso address :https://wordpress.com/customize/siteaddress.wordpress.com)
– I clicked on Header > Add New > Uploaded an image > Repositioned the cropper > Clicked Crop
I tried this with the image you mentioned, as well as several others, but was not able to duplicate the error.
Can you let me know what you’re doing differently?
-
I used Firefox on a Dell computer, both fully up to date. Other than that I didn’t do anything differently. But it wouldn’t let me crop the image upon upload, giving an error message. I can only crop it after upload on the media page, or on an external site.

Hi there,
I tested it on Firefox following @supernovia’s exact steps and I wasn’t able to replicate it either.
Are you using any extensions on Firefox or is the Enhanced Tracking Protection mode set to Strict (Firefox > Preferences > Privacy & Security)?
