Transfer site to WordPress
-
Currently we have a site hosted by Wix.com. Now we want to move it to WordPress. Obviously we want the content to be ready for publishing here before we shut down the site at Wix.com.
How to proceed? -
Hi –
No problem. I’m happy to help. First, I just want to clarify if you are planning to use WordPress.com or run your own WordPress installation? These are 2 different things:
-

Sure, @ robrock27. We don’t have a specific importer for Wix sites, but we do allow imports from RSS feeds. If you have a large site, that may make the most sense, and we can help once you’ve got the RSS file.
If your site is only a few pages, it may make more sense to simply copy and paste the content into new pages and blog posts as needed. Use the same titles if you want to help preserve your SEO. If you’re having trouble with the formatting, you can try pasting as plain text (here’s how; ignore the parts about MS Word). You would need to re-insert the images as well.
Once your content is in place, you can configure your theme (or choose a different one) and set up the design as you like it. Finally you can point the domain, and even transfer it if you’d like.
If you need help, we’re here, or if you get a paid plan (which you’ll need for the custom domain) you can get direct support with this.

Let’s see if I’ve understood correctly.
When signing up for a new account (will not use this) I will choose the option where I don’t transfer existing domain to WordPress but I will pick another name for the account. After a plan is paid I transfer content and when done I transfer domain? -
You’ll be picking a free site address to get started on. This way, you aren’t using up your domain credit on the plan. Everything is going to get set up on a free site with us – then, once you are ready, connect the domain and add the plan.
Does that make sense?

Now I don’t understand how to access the codefiles. I’ve looked for editor in ‘Appearance’ but it’s not there. Is it possible to edit the files when I’ve a free plan?
-
Hi there,
With the WordPress.com free plan, we do not allow access to the theme files. However, depending on the modification you wanted to make I’m sure we can guide you on how to make those.
If you upgrade to the Premium or Business plan you’ll be able to modify the CSS code for your site and with the Business plan you’ll be able to modify the full source code or upload custom themes and plugins.
Again, if you need help with something specific let us know and we’ll make sure to point you in the right direction.

Well, I wanted to position the logo in the header. Guess I must wait until I have a paid plan.
-
The other option is to use a theme that has that functionality built in by default.
-
Now I have upgraded to ‘Business plan’. Don’t understand how I can modify the full source code – no editor in ‘Appearance’. Also, can I access my domain with FTP?
-
The business plan does not grant FTP access like a traditional WordPress installation.
You’ll be able to upload a custom theme and use plugins on the site through the dashboard at https://wordpress.com/

The open source, WordPress installation, that uses as separate host, known as WordPress.org.
The differences between using a WordPress installation and WordPress.com are outlined on this page: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

Ah, thank you for that info. Too bad I didn’t get that earlier in this thread and before bying the plan. Is withdrawal possible?
-
You can get a full refund for up to 30 days after purchase, yes.
As you’ve already installed plugins on your site there are some steps we need to follow before we can remove the Business plan from your site, though, so please start a live chat with us at https://wordpress.com/help/contact so we can guide you through the process and make sure your refund is issued correctly.
