Hi,
Looking at the Motif theme demo using Chrome dev tools, it looks like the office image you’re seeing is a Featured Image (not a background image) and it looks like its max default width is 1140px.
Motif is a fully responsive site, so the image resizes downward proportionally when you or your users would be looking at it on smaller screens. Not sure what its customization options are offhand, but hope this answers your initial question.

No prob. I thought it was a header/background image too until I saw the text insert saying that that was what a Featured Image looked like using Motif.

Why is my image not in the middle like the mofit theme example? My image is the background , not in the middle. I like the Mofit example that they show under themes.

If the theme’s info page, http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/motif/
did not help you with your formatting questions, then perhaps the theme’s demo page might. There, you can click through to view the different page templates in action, etc:http://motifdemo.wordpress.com
It appears that you have set your Home, Contact and Portfolio page all to the Front Page template when I believe you were just trying to set the Home page to it. Remember, featured images for this theme will only show up 1140px wide. Some customizations with themes can only be done with a Custom Design upgrade. Best of luck with your site!
