Read More is not appearing in Front Page for Sela Theme

  • If you look at the demo, the words. Read More Appear with the featured images:

    https://selademo.wordpress.com

They don’t on my front page with the 3 featured images and blog posts on my front page.

    https://corporateteambuilding.wordpress.com

People may not know to click the images.

Also when I try to submit my posts to ‘Fetch as Google’ in webmaster tools I am getting an error message.

What is the point of having a blog if the posts can’t be listed in search engines.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • In the case of the Sela demo site, those three images with “read more” are linking to Pages and not Posts. https://wordpress.com/themes/sela/

I’ve tagged this for Staff input concerning your Google inquiry.

  • Why would that make a difference?

  • Hi there,

I see your site now has the Cerauno theme, but with Sela you need to add the Read More link. It doesn’t appear automatically in the front page widgets.

The instructions @justjennifer linked for you shows exactly what HTML is needed to embed an image and a Read More link in the front page widgets.

Also when I try to submit my posts to ‘Fetch as Google’ in webmaster tools I am getting an error message.

That is not an error. That is your site’s http headers which is what you’re supposed to see if you click Fetch as Google in Search Console.

If you want to see how your page actually appears to Google you need to click the Fetch and Render button instead.

Additionally, neither of those buttons show whether your site is listed in search engines or not. They only show how search engines see your site.

Your site’s settings do allow search engines to index it, but most search engines and especially Google give preference to recent content. As the last content on your site was published in January your site won’t have a very high search ranking and you shouldn’t expect it to appear on the first few pages of search results.

  • I still don’t understand how to do the read more link. I want to link to posts, not pages. I already have tabs linking to pages so there is no point in repeating them.

I did my own custom images as when I used images from the posts they showed up as all different sizes. Are you saying if I use the actually images from the posts the read more links will show up?

The last blog post I posted was in September, not January:

Team Building Budgets: 13 Keys to Locking in Savings

I post regularly. I did use Fetch and render and they could not pull up my posts. The older posts are indexed.

  • Oh my site is using Sela not Cerauno

  • Please look at the Sela instructions under the heading Front Page widgets.

You need to use a text widget, and in it paste the code in that section of the instructions:

    <a href="page/url/address"><img src="image/url/address"></a>

This is a full-width page template. It’s great for embedding a map, a large video, or a contact form. <a href="page/url/address">Read more →</a>

Then substitute the links with the links where you want them to point. This is explained step by step on the support page here:

    https://wordpress.com/themes/sela/

I did my own custom images as when I used images from the posts they showed up as all different sizes. Are you saying if I use the actually images from the posts the read more links will show up?

Nowhere did I or @justjennifer say that. I said you need to add the links you want to use to the widget manually.

The last blog post I posted was in September, not January:

Team Building Budgets: 13 Keys to Locking in Savings

I was looking at the site http://executiveoasis.wordpress.com/ which you indicated you needed help with when you created this thread.

That site’s settings also allow search engines to index it. What makes you think it is not being indexed?

It’s not possible for some pages on your site to be indexed and others not. But just because you published them and they are indexed it doesn’t mean they’ll show up when you search for them. Google controls what appears in search results, not us. We do everything possible to ensure that Google can see your posts, but they decide if and where those posts will show up in search results.

I say again, that result you received in Search Console is not an error. That is how your site’s http headers look and is what is supposed to show if you fetch a link as Google. The Fetch as Google does not show how your site appears in search results or if it is indexed by Google. It just shows how Google sees your site.

  • That post

    https://corporateteambuilding.wordpress.com/2016/09/09/team-building-savings

Is the most recent on the blog I want help with:

    https://corporateteambuilding.wordpress.com

It looks like I posted the wrong URL. Sorry about that.

I tried to submit a post to google and it said it did could not fetch and render it because of the re-direct message to another site. automattic.com/jobs

Okay so if I use this code:

    <img src=”image/url/address”>

The read more links will appear?

  • It isn’t showing up properly. The code you posted.

  • I tried this:

<a href="https://corporateteambuilding.wordpress.com/2016/05/09/generating-bottom-line-results"><img src="https://corporateteambuilding.files.wordpress.com/2016/10/executiveinitiatives.jpg"></a>Effective team building can pay for itself. Executives who perceive it as a cost-centre miss the mark. <!--more-->

    and this:

    <a href="https://corporateteambuilding.wordpress.com/2016/05/09/generating-bottom-line-results"><img src="https://corporateteambuilding.files.wordpress.com/2016/10/executiveinitiatives.jpg"></a>

    Neither one works.

  • Okay I fixed it. Read more is now visible.

Still waiting for guidance on why the header is re-directing and refers to X-hacker.

  • And I apologize for the misinformation on my part regarding the text widgets due to taking the information in the Theme Showcase literally. Glad you were able to resolve it in the end.

  • It shows up pefectly now.

    https://corporateteambuilding.wordpress.com

I dragged the the title widgets to the front page widget area as you suggested.

I put the title of the post in the post.

This is the code I used:

<a href="https://corporateteambuilding.wordpress.com/2016/05/09/generating-bottom-line-results"><img src="https://corporateteambuilding.files.wordpress.com/2016/10/executiveinitiatives.jpg"></a><i>Effective team building can pay for itself. Executives who perceive it as a cost-centre miss the mark. </i><a href="https://corporateteambuilding.wordpress.com/2016/05/09/generating-bottom-line-results"><b>Read more →</b></a>

  • Still waiting for guidance on why the header is re-directing and refers to X-hacker.

The X-hacker line is something we place in the headers of all sites on WordPress.com. It’s normal.

If you are getting a redirect message in Search Console it’s because you added your site using the http link and we show your site on https. Changing from http to https requires a 301 redirect. That is also normal and does not prevent your site from being indexed by Google. It just tells Google to look for your site at the https link instead of the http one.
