Re-publishing a published post switched to draft
-
Hi there,
When a published post is switched to draft, and it is published again from the Edit post, it uses the original publication date.
However, if I go to Drafts > Click on three dots next to the Draft post and click on Publish, it uses the current date.
Is it a bug or is it designed so?

Hello there,
This feels like more of an oversight rather than a bug…
Dates for posts can be manually overwritten regardless of those differences in experiences.
What is the name of the post being worked on?

Hi there,
I’m not working on any post as such, it was just I was going through a forum post and tried to work on it.
Here are the test posts (both published on 30th March) that were reverted to drafts and published today:
https://varshasc.wordpress.com/2022/03/30/post-1/
https://varshasc.wordpress.com/2022/10/28/standard-post-with-gallery/
The publication date for the second post is current as I published it by clicking on three dots next to the post, and the first one retained it’s publication date (it was published from the edit window).

The easiest solution might be to update the post date by going to Dashboard>Posts>Edit (the post in question). Then look for the published date info on the right hand side, click it, and update as needed.

Hi there,
Thanks for the information. I’m quite aware of updating the publication/Published dates.
My concern is why does the publication date differ when republishing a post switched to Draft via Edit post vs by clicking on Publish after clicking on three dots from Draft posts (https://wordpress.com/posts/drafts).
Is it a bug or is it designed so?

I’m not sure I understand the question.
The publication date for a post should stay the same as the original time it was published regardless of how many times it is edited.
Could you point me to one of your posts where you have seen the publication date change after editing it?

Hi,
https://varshasc.wordpress.com/2022/10/28/standard-post-with-gallery/
This is the post where the publication date changes. I switched it to draft, and published it by following the below steps:
My Site >> Posts >> Drafts >> three dots next to the post and clicked on Publish.
https://varshasc.wordpress.com/2022/03/30/post-1/
The publication date remained the same. Switched it to draft >>Selected the post to edit >> Clicked on Publish on top right.

Hi @varshasc
After some testing on my end, I can confirm your issue. It also seems to affect posts you intentionally backdate in the editor but publish in the /posts/drafts view… I would expect the date set by the editor to be respected in this situation.
I’ve reported this issue to our devs, as I agree it should be consistent behavior between the two publication methods. For now, you can work around this by publishing from the editor only (for the most consistent experience), and we will be happy to update you when we know more from our devs.
Thanks for your report and for taking the time to clarify with us! \o/
