post by email embeds not working

  • Post by email not really working with embed codes. Perhaps it’s a Gmail flaw?

If you email an embed code from say, Instagram, the code is just mangled and doesn’t work as expected.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,
That is not a blog hosted by WordPress.COM. Our WordPress.COM support docs do not relate to WordPress.ORG software, and we cannot provide support for it. You are posting to the wrong support forum.

WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different username accounts, logins, features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support documentation and separate support forums. Read the differences here http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

If you don’t have a username account at WordPress.ORG account, then click http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right hand corner of the page that opens, https://wordpress.org/support/register.php so you can post to the support forums there.

  • I was dumped here by Jetpack support, which obviously knows that I’m not using WordPress.com.

Frankly, I hate WordPress support forums and use StackExchange.

Regardless, I bet the bug pertains to WordPress.com as well. You’re welcome :-)

  • Too bad you didn’t say that up front but not to worry. Type modlook into the sidebar tags on this thread for Staff help. How do I get a Moderator/Staff reply for my question? https://en.support.wordpress.com/getting-help-in-the-forums/#how-do-i-get-a-moderatorstaff-reply-for-my-question Then please subscribe to this thread so you are notified when they respond. To subscribe look in the sidebar of this thread, find the subscribe to topics link and click it.

  • There’s no sidebar here becausd your viewport is probably set to device-width. In any case, I don’t actually need help.

Jetpack’s softwate wrote that “I need help with…” Those are not my words. I’m only recommending someone review how raw html codes are imported from email. Some kind of
...
shortcode might defeat the time-saving appeal of post-by-email.

Granted, not really urgent but maybe someone will think it’s an interesting problem to solve.

  • I would have just edited the Wiki myself but that wasn’t an option.

  • I tagged this thread for you.

  • Hi @pjbrunet,

The Post By Email parser will strip out any code it does not recognize — you can find what it does support here.

Instead of using embed code, try using the shortcodes supported by Jetpack:
    http://jetpack.me/support/shortcode-embeds/

Also, note that while Jetpack will support just pasting the link when using the regular editor, for Post by Email, you’ll want to use the actual shortcode.

For example, while just pasting a link to an instagram image in the email doesn’t work, this does:

    [instagram url=https://instagram.com/p/7VwtS5HjL9/]

    I hope that helps.

  • OK thanks for the thoughtful response.

the Post by Email system will strip unnecessary HTML tags so that your email is displayed correctly. Note that you will need to use an email client that supports rich text or HTML formatting in order to make use of this feature. Most website based clients (Hotmail, Gmail) do support this, as do most desktop clients (Outlook, Mail). You may need to switch your client into rich text or formatted mode.

It’s one of those things I could solve if I really cared. Maybe Gmail settings messed up the formatting. Word wrap? Or maybe it’s just one character that did it. It should be possible to get any HTML code from Gmail into WordPress, if ultimately I had to bypass WordPress and go straight to MySQL or whatever. But would that be worth the energy? Probably not. I was thinking about using this email posting feature to build some other things, but the more I think about it, there’s easier ways to do it.

Anyway, that Instagram shortcode has a couple of issues. Like there’s two variations of that code and only one of them partly works and the other does not work at all. Partly works, as in it doesn’t show the full-size image. LOL. Probably some “media library” conversion thing going on there. Anyway, I already moved on to other things, sorry for the confusion.

  • Alright, thanks for the feedback!
