Pingbacks, Backlinks and Trackbacks – a general question

  • I have been reading documentation all morning trying to understand but my general question is still unanswered.

I notice when I refer to my own posts, I get a pingback in my comments. For example, http://breakingtherubberband.wordpress.com/2011/12/27/day-26-saving-change/ However I see where some followers have linked to my posts, but I receive no pingback.

I don’t need to be notified, but I am trying to understand the process so I can be a conscientious blogger. I receive a lot of ideas form other posts and would like to link to them.

If I link to post from another blogger that is relevant to my subject, should I inform them or will they be notified?
Should I ask for permission first?
Is there a difference between linking to the home page and linking to the post?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Settings > Discussion: “Attempt to notify any blogs linked to from the article”.
If another wp.com blogger has disabled this option, you won’t be notified when they link to a post of yours.
If you have enabled it, others will be notified when you link to their posts. And no, you don’t need permission to link.
To prevent self-pings, you use a special version of the URL of your posts:

  • Thank you so much for answering all three :-)

Is it considered poor form to ping yourself? I often refer to past posts…for navigation would the reader want to see where that post is refered to?
