P2 retired?!? What can I do?
-
As a teacher forced to work remotely due to the pandemic, I am selecting the tools that I will use with a new class and I thought about the P2 theme (which I already use for internal communication of the team of a small publisher house). To my surprise, I saw that this theme is no longer accessible and that, at the same time, it seems that WordPress is working on a new version of it (https://wordpress.com/p2/). Is there a deadline for the release of this new version?

We are indeed looking at re-launching this as a new product that’s significantly better than the original: https://wordpress.com/p2/
We don’t have an ETA yet, but I recommend joining the early access program: https://wordpress.com/p2/waitlist/

Thank you, I will do it!
But can’t you pass on the information that, given the pandemic, the launch of this new version has become an urgent necessity? I just don’t trust Google or Facebook’s ethical stance with the data that my teenage students will share; but I totally trust WordPress.com

@staff-blorbo, as a user of previous versions, is it possible to give any suggestions for the development of this new project (in fact I would only have one)?

You’re welcome to share any feedback here, and we will make sure the team developing this sees it :)

Thanks, @kokkieh.
Well, I think we should have the OPTION to make every commented post go to the top of the page. I´m not talking about newest comments first, but the posts with the comments in the top of the homepage (after a refresh), like in this forum when someone comment on a topic.
When a site has posts with a perennial value, the most important thing is not their posting date, but the date of the comments made on them. In my experience using P2 as a means of communication for a working group, the lack of this possibility causes many to lose very interesting discussions, based on new feedback, on a subject posted some time ago.
In addition, this feature would make it possible to create sites similar to a forum, something that is sorely missed on WordPress.com.

In my current case, this problem is even more serious, because as I intend to use the new P2 in tutoring with teenagers, I have to do my best to compensated their level of distraction by some tool on the site; and this one (make every commented post go to the top of the homepage) seems simple, efficient and passed in the test of time.

Following this discussion with interest.
The old P/O2 had a couple of special widgets like “recent activity” and also the standard “recent comments” widget. Would that not accomplish something similar?
-
No, in practice the effect is not the same. I even tried to use them for that purpose, but unsuccessfully.

Obviously, developers can think of another solution to that problem.
I’m eager (and excited) to learn how they solve that. As I said, following with interest.

There are some things that only a member can see.
I have already launched a group for students and everything is going well.

@justjennifer, I think I found a way to give to P2 a forum style:

Hi Thiago – It’s an interesting idea, though personally I would find it distracting.
Just so you know, here in the forums we’ve been suggesting P2 to users as a forum-like theme for years. https://wordpress.com/forums/topic-tag/p2/
