New to WordPress, struggling to set up

  • Ok going straight in! On the my sites dashboard, under the ‘Publish’ header, there is a ‘Pages’ link. It has an About page, Contact, and then the Blog Posts – your latest posts, says Not Used. I can’t understand why because I’ve tester posted a few blog posts, so it can’t be unused, so why is this like this? Surely this should now be clickable, and I should be able to make this option the homepage for example, as I can do with About or Contact Me pages.
If anyone has any idea what I’m on about and can maybe help that would be fab! Thanks so much.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Go to My Sites > Customize > Static Front Page and make sure there is a page selected under the “Posts page” heading. It looks like you will need to create a placeholder page and you can use the “+ Add New Page” just below the dropdown in that same section.

Once you’ve done that, you will also want to update the menu at https://wordpress.com/menus/sammyyraestyle.wordpress.com

If you have any questions about the menu part when you get to that part, reply here and let me know what you need help with.

  • Hi! Thanks for your response. That was really helpful and I now am able to add new static pages on my main menu bar which is good. I just still can’t understand why on the list of my static Pages in the dashboard, the Blog Posts Page is saying Not Used, even though I have published 4 posts. I thought it would need to be activated or something, so I made some example posts, but even now they are live, it says Not Used. Because of that there is no way for anyone who visits my blog to actually find the posts if they then click on About Me, for example.
I think what I’m asking, is how do I have a static Page link, that will take visitors to my chronological blog posts?
    Thanks again.

  • You currently have created two pages: About Sammyystyle and Contact.

Next, create another page called “Latest Posts” to use as a placeholder. It doesn’t matter what’s in the body of the page, it can be blank.

Then, go to My Sites > Customize > Static Front Page and change the “Posts page” to “Latest Posts”

After that, I think you may want to redo the menu. It seems like part of the problem in this case is menu items were added before pages existed or maybe they were added and then the pages were rejiggered. I’m not sure! In any case though, it’d probably just work best to re-create the Latest Posts menu item after the other steps above are done.

Try those steps and post back if you get stuck again!
