New Theme – Permalink Structure

  • Good afternoon,

I have been using a custom theme on my WordPress site for the past several months. It uses a custom plugin that creates articles under a custom post type “ht_mt”.

I am looking to upgrade my template to a newer, much more appealing layout. My concern is with the permalink structure of my website. Right now, the article plugin uses “www.website-address.com/article-database/article-name.”

Using an additional plugin, when I change the post type from “ht_mt” to “Post,” it removes the /article-datebase/ from the permalink. Most of my articles have been indexed by reddit and other social media sites. I am unable to change their url address.

Is there an easy way to change the post type without impacting the existing permalinks. I don’t want to have 404 errors all over my site.

Any new post will be a standard “post”

I know I can use 301 redirects, but I would have to redirect over 100 articles. Any suggestions would be great.

  • Hey stockcaddy!

I took a look at your website excelbuddy.com and it appears that it’s not hosted on WordPress.com. Right now it’s pointing to SiteGround.

Generally that means you are a WordPress.org user. While they might seem the same, there are actually some pretty substantial differences between the two systems. You can find out more about the difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

The forum you’re on right now is dedicated to WordPress.com sites only. While we won’t be able to help you here, if you go to https://wordpress.org/support/ there’s a pretty good chance you’ll be able to get some assistance for your site.

With that being said, there’s a support article about changing a WordPress.org permalink structure here: https://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Permalinks#Choosing_your_permalink_structure That might help solve your issue. If not then definitely reach out to the WordPress.org support forums and they should be able to help.

Thanks for reaching out and good luck with your site!

  • I apologize! I didn’t realize that it was different. Thank you for the response.
