Navigation Block Colours & Empty Links

  • Hey,

Testing out the new full site editing feature, the navigation block colour section (https://i.imgur.com/uYWTsA4.png) can each section be explained on what it should change colours.

Unless I’m misunderstanding but the 3rd option means the drop down / sub menu text colour? If that’s the case I’ve set this as a test example to orange, yet the sub menu text colour is black. (https://i.imgur.com/PPePwwp.png)

Also secondly I can’t seem to figure out how to have empty navigation links, that simply act a label. Label that can be used for sub menu / other pages underneath. Using the classic method simply having the # in custom links and removing it simply creates the label without a link.

Now you can’t do that with this new block system, as a link is automatically created to the homepage?

    Thanks,

  • Tried multiple themes now, maybe I’m misunderstanding the colour choice options and struggling also with the new full site editing on the ability to add empty navigation links onto our menu / navigation block.

  • Hello there,

Happy to help you with this.

(https://i.imgur.com/uYWTsA4.png) can each section be explained on what it should change colours.

    Sure!

Text: This is the main menu text colour.
Background: This is the background of the text colour
Submenu and overlay text: This is submenu text colour when the menu is viewed on a mobile. If you resize the screen you’ll see the menu change, and when opened there will be a background colour.
Submenu and overlay background: This is the background colour of the menu, when it’s opened on a mobile device.

Also secondly I can’t seem to figure out how to have empty navigation links, that simply act a label. Label that can be used for sub menu / other pages underneath. Using the classic method simply having the # in custom links and removing it simply creates the label without a link.

It is possible to add a custom link and add a # . When adding a link you can search for a custom link and that would be the field where this can be added. The text can also be changed, and the link would remain.

  • Hey,

Thank you for the explanation appreciate it :)

So I’m wanting to change the text colour within this submenu (https://i.imgur.com/Aj9Lx4C.png), in this example being “page three & page four”?
I’m struggling to find out which should be the correct option to change the text colour for the submenus?

And for the empty links (https://i.imgur.com/5E7hH3i.png), created a new example custom link being “test” and as you can see there’s no URL posted in the field. Previously in the old classic way having something like this will simply just create a label of “test” on the menu bar without being linked to anything, which is exactly how I want it.

But with the new full site editing and block features (https://i.imgur.com/Q6VFRsn.png), it automatically creates a link back to the Homepage I don’t want that link, I simply want a label on the menu bar that doesn’t link anywhere, yet it always requires and adds automatically a link to the Homepage?

Thanks in advance for all the help and support :)

That’s because there isn’t an option currently. There’s an open enhancement request for this on the open-source WordPress GitHub to add styling for submenu items:

    https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/issues/38664

The WordPress community is in charge of the development of the WordPress software, so we don’t have control over when these items will be worked on.

The only current workaround would be to determine the correct CSS to style those elements, which would require a Premium plan or higher to access here at WordPress.com.

Looking through the WordPress development GitHub, it seems like there should be a setting to do just that. But I’m not seeing it in the full site editor.

It looks like the only way to do this at the moment would be to go to Appearance -> Customize and edit your menus there.

Can you try that and see if you can set that submenu label that way? I know it’s not the most intuitive way to update the menu, but that’s all I can see as an option at the moment. :(

  • Hey,

Thanks for the details and information regarding the Navigation Colours and Submenu Text Colour.

In regards, to the empty links and creating simply a label. That still doesn’t work tried through Appearance -> Customize, adding a link through the Navigation Block via full site editing feature. Simply can’t create a label, they automatically create a link to the Homepage?

So my conclusion is currently the new Navigation Block and full site editing doesn’t have this feature of simply creating a empty link in navigation bar?

As far as I can tell, there isn’t. There have been requests to add this functionality, so as the WordPress open-source volunteers make improvements to the editor, hopefully they’ll add this in the future.
