Large Images no longer displaying correctly (“Overhanging Full-Size Image”)
-
I am using the Twenty Sixteen theme (demo here), which is supposed to display large images wider than the text column (“Overhanging Full-Size Image“) and allows pull quotes to be outside the left edge of the text column.
This is what it’s supposed to look like on a desktop display (https://i0.wp.com/theme.files.wordpress.com/2015/12/twenty-sixteen.jpg?ssl=1&w=735).
In the last few days everything has been compressed down to the text column width, except on a handful of pages. Why is this happening and can it be corrected?

Hi there,
The Twenty Sixteen theme is an older one (you can guess how old!) that was actually designed before we had a block editor on WordPress.com. Because of this, the method that this theme uses for creating that layout is one that is designed with the classic editor in mind. Adding images and quotes using blocks does not result in the same outcome.
You do have a few options to proceed.
- You can compose your pages and blog posts in the classic editor, and it will work as expected.
- This will take some experimentation but you may also be able to do this in the block editor by composing within the Classic block as well. For example you may be able to add images via the classic block, and the theme will correctly interpret and display those as overhanging full size images
- For pull quotes specifically, those require the use of HTML as you can see by reading the setup documentation here. You can add this code in the block editor by using the HTML block, and they should render correctly in the published view
Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

I posted that because the theme had been working properly with the block editor and reasonably large images until a month or so ago. Part of the question is “what changed?” and can I reverse it?

Hey there,
Part of the question is “what changed?” and can I reverse it?
Have you been using the block editor out of curiosity?
The reason why I ask is because it’s possible that this change in usage could be the cause.
A lot of the issues we see with older themes is how they gel with the block editor. Older themes weren’t built with the block editor in mind, which explains a lot of the issues we see…
I hope this is some helpful insights. :)

I kept being urged on WordPress to should switch to the block editor. I waited a bit to find out how it worked, and then changed. That was several years ago. Now that I’m used to using it, I find it has many advantages. For all those years there was no problem with how the pages displayed until a month or so ago. The change in the display arose from something WordPress has done, not because I switched to block editing.

Another possibility is that the theme could be having conflict with an updated browser version. So if your browser automatically updated that would explain the sudden change in behavior with regard to the images.
-
I thought of that but wasn’t able to check at the time. I have tried Firefox and Edge. Both display the same way now, and used to display as intended. Both have been updated of course, but I don’t know enough to tell whether the updating was the cause

Hey there,
Are you able to provide a screenshot of what you’re seeing with your site in particular please?
This perhaps might provide some clues and help with next steps.

By the way, this page does display the images correctly: https://tradebetablog.wordpress.com/2021/06/18/uk-australia-tariff-quotas/, for now at least in Firefox and Edge:
-
This is one where it’s not working as it used to, link: https://tradebetablog.wordpress.com/2022/07/04/mc12-big-failure-agriculture/
The image is 1200×800

And here’s one that is still working correctly from https://tradebetablog.wordpress.com/2021/06/18/uk-australia-tariff-quotas/:
-
And this <blockquote class=”alignleft wp-block-quote is-style-plain”> box aligns with the left margin of the text, instead of being further to the left. Also from https://tradebetablog.wordpress.com/2022/07/04/mc12-big-failure-agriculture/

Thanks for those screen shots. We haven’t been able to narrow down what’s causing your experience to change with the overhang. I was able to find some other reports of this happening and hopefully our team can take a look to provide some more insight soon. This has been reported here: https://github.com/Automattic/themes/issues/7104

Thank you. I look forward to the outcome. It’s not fatal. The posts can still be read. But it would be better if they displayed properly.
-
Follow up: I created a new page with a large image but no pull-quote (<blockquote …>). The image displays correctly. I haven’t had time to go through the pages to check, but is it possible that the problem is caused by a pull-quote/blockquote?

Correction, this is the page: https://tradebetablog.wordpress.com/2023/06/07/wto-slow-ratify-fisheries-agreement/

Yes, the bug is definitely related to the pull quote and it being left aligned. We replicated that in the initial report and are looking for a fix. Nice observation! – we will surely keep you updated on what we find. Thanks!
