Ipad log in problem, workaround
-
Using ipad with an old ios 6.1. Log in page Username and Password boxes are inactive, greyed out, so I cannot log in…however (as you can see) I have discovered I can log in via this support page! Any suggestions on solving the problem on the main log in page? Thanks, Ken

Hi there,
You need to have at least version 10.0 of iOS for the WordPress app to be fully functional.
-
Thanks fstat,
Thanks so much and I’m sure you’re right but I have used the old style dashboard via links such as https://’..mysite..’.wordpress.com/wp-admin/index.php for some while, since the older dashboard layout has worked much better for me, especially on ios6 but recently, in the last month, the login page specifically has stopped working, for me.
Has there been a change to the log in page, since as I say, once logged in via my workaround, all the old dashboard links still work fine, for me!
(Perhaps one day I’ll upgrade my ios but I’m nervous about losing work, eg on old version Apple Pages).

Can you please send me a screenshot of what you’re seeing when you try to log-in via the classic dashboard?
Here’s how to take a screenshot:

Hi,
Yes indeed, I've attached 2 screenshots.
The first is the login page. I'm not sure if greyed out is the right description but I can't type into the email/username box.
The second is the help page I tried… Once logged in via https://en.forums.wordpress.com I could reach en.support.wordpress.com but when I used the 'Get Help' link, I was taken to wordpress.com/help/contact which is blank.
Thanks,
Ken

Some further points…
A few months ago my wordpress editor stopped showing the Visual Editor icon and most of the Text Editor tool icons but these have reappeared now.I can also log in using the flash enabled proxy server with the Photon browser though not all wordpress editing functions work, so I wondered if my ipaddress might be blocked by WordPress but that doesn't seem possible since I can log in via forums.wordpress and I don't have active scripting problems on other sites.

Hi Ken,
Can you please upload the screenshots to your media library so I can see them?
Thanks!

Can you please clear Safari’s cache and try again? Here are the instructions on how to do it:
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201265
If this doesn’t work or you have more questions, just let me know and I’ll be happy to help!

Clearing the browser’s cache will delete your browsing history, temporary files, and any saved passwords.
-
I cleared the browser’s cache when you suggested it and also in the past, also reset network settings, changed sim card and tried different browsers. The only time the log in page has worked has been when I use a proxy server, ie using a different IP address but I have checked IPaddress blacklists and my address seems OK.
Also, Javascript and other active content are enabled. If it is not due to browser cache cooky restrictions on my access, what other issues are you considering?
Many thanks,
Ken

Hi Ken,
I tested this issue on an iPad 3 running iOS 6.1 by logging-in via the wp-admin dashboard. As you can see from the screenshot below, I can type in both fields (username and password) and I can log-in and use the dashboard properly.
Seems to me that it might be an issue with your OS as Safari is deeply integrated into iOs.

Hi,
Thanks for looking into this for me.
I have tried logging in to several other WordPress websites I own.
Several work, two don’t including cappellanovocastriensis.com
It seems to be specific to these websites.
I don’t think it is my Safari browser and I’m not sure my ios would work abnormally with certain WordPress domains only.
I have uploaded screenshots of the sites that work and don’t work to my media store.Ken

Hi Ken,
I was able to log-in to all of your sites listed under your account by using the wp-admin login URL. Please use this method instead of trying to log-in directly from https://wordpress.com/
-
Thanks!
I do always login using “mysite”.com/wp-admin or /wp-login.php but cappellanovocastriensis.com and the other sites that do not open the login page correctly consistently redirect to wordpress.com/login?redirect_to=https://….. whereas the two sites that do open correctly redirect to “mysite”.wordpress.com/login?redirect_to=https://
I’m now logging in via one of those sites that admits me, then going to ‘My Blogs’ and transferring over to cappellanovocastriensis.com
Not ideal, but quicker than signing in via en.forums.wordpress.comWhat I cannot understand is why some sites open the login page correctly for me and others don’t and secondly, why using a proxy server lets me in correctly to all my sites.
One problem coming up is that even when I have gained access to the classic dashboard, although it works for editing it does not open Plans, Themes or Plugins and as I am considering upgrading to business plan to obtain plugins, once again I will have to go through a proxy server, which is definitely not the way I want to manage my websites.
Oh well, I don’t think I’m going to solve the problems any better at the moment. Unless you have any further thoughts, perhaps we should close the thread.

Hi Ken,
Can you tell me how long this is happening? I’m trying to determine if this is due to your version of Safari or if there’s something wrong with your iPad’s network settings.
Thanks!

Hi,
It started about a month ago. Before that, for several months I had problems with the classic dashboard editor not showing all the toolbar icons or visual editor icon.
If I remember correctly, the login problem started after I tried to update safari and chrome browsers to newer versions (though in fact the latest version available to ios6 seems to be what I already had, so as far as I know, although these browsers were reinstalled, they are the same browser version as before).
Note, the problem is not restricted to Safari, it occurs just the same in Chrome and Photon browsers.
I’m not sure what you are thinking about in terms of my ipad network settings.
However after reinstalling Safari and Chrome, several things did change – the login problem I now have for 4 of my 6 wordpress domains; whilst in the editor the missing toolbar and visual editor icons have reappeared; also in Widgets a new option for html coding has appeared (as an aside, I cannot get automatic paragraphs in this coding widget, i.e. hitting ‘return’ creates a new line of text in the widget but not on-screen).

Hello Ken,
Can you please check if you’re able to log in using this link?
https://wordpress.com/wp-login.php?no-calypso
We changed the login screen about a month ago, and that link will force your browser to the old login screen. If that link works, then the problem is related to that change, but it also means there’s not really anything we’ll be able to do about it.
iOS 6 came out in 2012, so that operating system is five years old. In IT terms that’s ancient – in the past five years new versions of HTML, CSS and JavaScript have been released, and it’s possible that current web technology has simply reached the point where the browsers you can still use on iOS 6 simply no longer understand the code that most modern websites, including WordPress.com, use to function – the new login screen uses JavaScript, like most of the My Sites interface, and if your browser doesn’t support the newest version of JS it means that screen won’t work correctly in your browser.
So the new login screen simply won’t be able to work in the browsers in iOS 6 and the issues you’ve experienced with the editor and the Help screen can also be explained by this.. The old login link will still be around for a while, but it will eventually be removed, because we cannot support older operating systems and browsers indefinitely. At that point using an updated browser will be the only option.

Sorry for a slow reply over the holiday break and thanks for this information. I understand what you are saying.
I can reach the old log in screen via the link you sent.
Curiously, I can also reach it with two of my own wordpress blog urls but not others.
I am even more ancient than my ios6.1 but the real reason I am nervous about updating is simply because I have a lot of documents in the previous version of Pages and I have read that updating ios forces me into the new Pages app, with a distinct possibility of losing old documents.
I am not sure even a mac back up will let me restore these documents and I haven’t been able to establish if I can install both the old and the new Pages apps.
However, I may have to bite the bullet at some point…Thanks,
Ken
