How domain mapping works
Registering an underlying .wordpress.com URL first is required for domain mapping. That underlying URL does not have to match the domain URL when you are domain mapping. What domain mapping does is providing a seamless redirect to the very same content under the new domain URL when a person clicks the old URL .wordpress.com to the original content. It can take up to 72 hours for domain propagation to take place throughout the internet but it doesn’t usually take that long. https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/There are 3 ways to add a custom domain to your blog. Please note that an active WordPress.com plan is required to add a custom domain to your site. https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/#getting-started
WordPress.com does not accept domain transfers but mapping an existing domain is possible. http://support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/ The domain or mapping of any existing domain URL is included in the pricing for a personal upgrade, a premium and a business upgrade. The WordPress.COM upgrade for mapping a domain must be renewed annually.
WordPress.com does not provide an email service for blogs on their sub domains or on custom domains. Please see these support docs

Thank you @timethief for your detailed answer. I also believed the same so far. However, I just stumbled upon something which is contrary to this belief. Please check https://en.support.wordpress.com/incoming-domain-transfer/
So just thought to confirm with mods.

Did you click through to https://en.support.wordpress.com/incoming-domain-transfer/prepare-domain-for-transfer/

Yes, I checked that too. However, I tried to transfer one domain name in my account and couldn’t find the option as described in the help document.

Spoilers :) We’re working on it, as you can see! We’ll be updating volunteers presently.

What exactly do you mean here? What domain did you try to transfer?
You’ll only see the transfer option as in that doc if you go to My Site ->Domains ->Add and try to add a domain that is already registered at a different domain registrar. You won’t see that option on any domain already on your account, or for a domain that doesn’t already exist at another registrar.

Appreciate your guidance @Kokkieh

I tried the same guidelines a few hours back (when I wrote this here) but I was only given an option to map my domain name. However, I checked it now and I see the option as described in the help document.
I am planning to create a website using Job Board plugins (https://wordpress.com/plugins/onwpcom.wordpress.com?s=job+boards) however still hesitating because membership plugins are not fully supported yet on a website under the business plan.

I did some testing with a Business Plan site, and if you use the WP Job Manager plugin along with WooCommerce, it appears visitors are able to create customer accounts on the site without needing a WordPress.com account.
It will be a bit of work to set things up between the two plugins, but I tested the user signup and it works quite smoothly. You can test it out here:
https://kokkieat.com/submit-job/
Use an email address not attached to your WordPress.com account – if you have Gmail the +alias method will work. You can create an account during a job submission, or on the My Accounts page, the way I have it set up on that test site.

My pleasure :)
Gave me an opportunity to learn WooCommerce and WPJM a bit better which are, after all, also Automattic products.

WPJM doesn’t have a user registration page. It only allows account registration when you create a listing. That plugin’s documentation suggests using WooCommerce’s registration page if you need that to be on a separate page.
https://wpjobmanager.com/document/registration-login-page/
And I did some more testing: Without that page you can create a user account on the site, but the moment you try to log back in you’re taken to the regular WordPress.com login flow, which requires you to have a WordPress.com account.
The WooCommerce My Account page login form allows you to log into your account without being forced into the WordPress.com login flow, so you can have a WooCommerce customer account to use for WPJM, without having a WordPress.com account connected to the site.
You can test this. Submit a job listing on that test site, and create a password via the email you’ll receive. Then log out. Try logging in with your email and password on the Submit Listing page, and try logging in on the My Account page.
