How many tags should I use per post?
-
I’ve been blogging since last October, and I’ve never fully understood the tag and category features. I recently realized that my posts weren’t showing up at all in the global tags area, and I searched around the forum and couldn’t find a solution that fit. Is there a limit on the number of tags you can use before it blocks you out? That’s all I could come up with when looking around. I’d always just assumed the more tags the better, so naturally my posts all are tagged with about a million keywords. Any help on this is GREATLY appreciated.

There is a limit: you are safe as long as you use ten or fewer tags. I’ve heard from staff at various times that you can use up to 12 or so without problem, but fewer is more conservative. Ten should be safe. More than sixteen will get you reported as a tag spammer.

Greattttt. My last post has about 100. I’m sure I’m on WordPress’s Most Wanted for tag spamming. I’ll definitely change my ways. Thanks for response!

Also note that tags and categories function in exactly the same way, so
a) the “conservative” number applies to the total tags plus categories per post
b) there’s no point in using the same word or phrase as both a tag and a category in the same post. -

Most people are unaware of this restriction! The conservative blogger really has a great no. of tags to many posts!

I’m new to this whole blogging business, can somebody explain to me exactly what tags are what they do?

@shawnfrancis: See here:

And please paste the exact URL of your blog when asking questions here, or link your nickname to your blog (as explained in the Sticky 8 Things to Know Before Posting). We usually need that to give a relevant answer.
