How do I copy my WP.com blog to a "sandbox" for enhancing and modifying

  • I have a WP.com blog in need of modification. It is design by committee so I need to be able to isolate it from the current version and make it available to the committee for review. Eventually I will want to move the finished new version into production. What is the best way to approach this?

    Thank you,

    Terry

  • We provide support here only for WordPress.COM hosted blogs.
We do not provide support for WordPress.ORG software installs.

I’m sorry but we cannot provide accurate answers to any blogger who fails to provide the exact URL starting with http:// for the exact blog they refer to so we can verify where it is hosted. Please do that now.

  • Please excuse me for omitting the URL it is http://aauwroswell.wordpress.com

  • Okay.

    You have two choices.

    1. two wordpress.com blogs – same username account & email address

While logged into WordPress.com register another blog under the same username account with the same associated email address by clicking this link http://en.support.wordpress.com/register-a-blog/#adding-new-blog-to-an-existing-account and following through.

    2. two wordpress.com username accounts – a blog registered under each one with – a different email address

While NOT logged into WordPress.com you can register a new username account, under a different email address and then register a blog under it by clicking this link https://signup.wordpress.com/signup/ and following through.

If you select 2. then clear your browser cache https://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/#clearing-your-browser-cache and cookies. https://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/#clearing-wordpress-com-cookies

Once you have two wordpress.com blogs you can use these instructions to create an XML export file of the content (not the theme as that cannot be exported) and move it to the new blog.

    Import a Website

  • You can have either a public or a private WordPress.COM hosted blog and there is no limitation on the total number of contributors to any blog. If you’d like to invite others to publish posts or help approve comments on your blog, you can invite them to be a Contributor, Editor, or Author. If you want users to receive updates each time you publish new content you can invite them to be a follower/viewer.

To change blog visibility to Private go to > Settings > Reading scroll to Blog Visibility and choose option 3. See the guide here http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings

    See here please:

    and here http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#author

The person will have to register a username account which requires an email address only, but does not need to register a blog. That requirement is because the software has to be able to differentiate between hackers and official users and allow access only to those with username accounts and official roles on the blog.

Upon receipt of the invitation the invitee will need to click the “Accept Invitation” button in the invitation email. If the invitee is logged into their WordPress.com username account, he or she will be taken directly to your blog. If not, he or she will be taken to the log-in screen, where he or she can either log in, or can register a new WordPress.COM user account.

Note that invitees who do create a new WordPress.com account at that point will still need to return to the invitation email and click the “Accept Invitation” button after doing so.

Lastly, there is a built-in spammer prevention so send out only 10 invitations at one point in time and then wait and manage those before sending out 10 more.

  • Thank you for the prompt reply.

If I correctly understand regardless of alternatives 1.) or 2.), I can only transfer data excluding images in the header and menu setup. I don’t see this as a big issue since I plan to use the same Theme.

Following this along from concept stage, proving functionality, approval from the committee, can I then make the development blog the production blog? We have a domain mapped to the current version. Is this a transfer function?
