HD YouTube embed
-
I have tried to force an embedded YouTube video on my site to display in HD by adding ‘vq=hd1080’ to the embedded URL, e.g.:
[embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZjexSVmy9gY&rel=0&hd=1&vq=hd1080[/embed]
However, this doesn’t create the desired effect, and I’m puzzled as to why this might be. Any idea what I’m doing wrong?

Hi there, my educated guess is that if a viewer’s monitor cannot play HD, that instruction is ignored or it is a parameter that YouTube doesn’t support or both.
FWIW-when I visited the link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZjexSVmy9gY on my desktop computer, playback for me on my HD monitor was automatically HD.
I’d also suggest taking into consideration that if your site visitors are using a mobile device, forcing them to view HD will significantly increase their data consumption. Just a thought which seems to be supported by this answer: https://support.google.com/youtube/thread/2949699?hl=en?msgid=18222391

Thanks for the reply. Just one question: if a monitor does not support HD, then forcing HD in manual mode should not work either, should it? Because both on my PC and my iPad I can manually select HD, it just won’t come on automatically.
As for using HD, I don’t tend to use this as the default option, it’s just that two dipper videos look rather grainy unless I opt for the HD setting.

These are the current YouTube embed customization options available: https://en.support.wordpress.com/videos/youtube/#video-customization-options but no mention of playback quality nor do I see anything about setting playback quality of an embed in YouTube’s support pages: https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/171780?hl=en-GB and https://support.google.com/youtube/search?q=Embed+videos+in+HD From answers there it looks like playback is determined by YouTube depending on the device and available internet speed that is accessing the video.
As you mentioned, the viewer can manually change to HD, although I have doubts that HD is being shown if the device doesn’t support it.
If these are your videos, I’d also suggest posting to the YouTube help forums for advice.
