Having trouble getting my first .php page to display

  • I have never created a website before. I am trying to develop this skill using WordPress for Dummies. The first exercise is to: 1) create a simple text page (using Text Editor on my Mac); 2) upload it to my Fetch App; and 3) type in a URL http://insertdomainname/test.php. I use my actual domain name in my browser. When I hit return, I get a new tab with my domain name at the top but my text does not show up. I am using WordPress, provided by my Host, Network Solutions. I have tried uploading my ‘test.php’ document both separately and simultaneously in the folders ‘cgi-bin’ and ‘htdocs’ which are in my Fetch app and the file is copied to the folder(s). I have triple checked the formatting of the text doc with what’s in the book. No luck so far.
    What am I doing wrong?

  • Hi there :)

Your site is not hosted on WordPress.com servers. It is using the WordPress.org software at another hosting provider.

The staff members can not access files or data for sites hosted elsewhere because WordPress.com and WordPress.org are separate entities.

You can get more information about the differences between WordPress.org software and WordPress.com here: https://wordpress.com/support/com-vs-org/

Nevertheless, WordPress.org documentation also provides excellent resources for sites using the open-source WordPress.org software:
    https://wordpress.org/support/

And you can find support at the WordPress.org forums as well: https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

Furthermore, you can also get in touch with your hosting provider’s support team.
