Featured image does not publish
-
I am trying to add ‘featured images’ to appear above my posts. In the edit mode, the images do display. However, they are not showing up in reader mode. Could a solution be suggested?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi,
Which theme are you using? Themes have various specifications regarding minimum dimensions (especially the width), which might cause the rejection of an image that isn’t wide or tall enough.
The theme guides of WordPress.com sites all have URLs of the form
https://wordpress.com/themes/theme-name/. Substitute the name of the theme at “theme-name” to find the appropriate guide. -
Hi thanks – this is Big Brother theme. Does this theme support feature images at all? The required dimensions were not immediately obvious to me from the theme guide.
Thank you!
-
You’re welcome.
Thanks for providing the theme name. Yes, the theme supports featured images. The Quick Specs section of the Big Brother theme guide says:
The recommended size for a custom header image is 1000 × 200 [pixels]
-
Sorry, that spec pertains to a header image not a featured image. I don’t find a spec for featured images in the guide. In a test site with the Big Brother theme I have a featured image with file size 1440 X 221. It is displayed on the page, but scaled to 731 X 112. The same image and another one of size 1024 X 768 fail to display when assigned as featured images on a post. I haven’t figured out why.
I’m going to add a “modlook” tag to the sidebar to call for staff attention.
-
OK, thank you! I was just trying to re-size in a variety of ways, but nothing worked out for me….

It seems that Big Brother doesn’t appear in the current list of free themes that supports Featured Images
https://en.support.wordpress.com/featured-images/
https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/features/featured-images/?sort=freeI’ll leave this tagged for Staff so they will reply if an image you’ve added as a Featured Image to a Post will show up in the WPcom Reader even if it doesn’t appear on your site.

I am having the same problem with the theme “Adaption”
The sample shows a featured image.
Please advise

Hi @cooktravisj, Big Brother does not support featured images on the blog page.
https://bigbrotherdemo.wordpress.com/news/In fact several themes do not. Do you want help trying to find one that does though?
If so, does every post have a featured image or only some? Will you want any of them to show up as large images on individual posts?
-
@maryagnessutton Adaption does support featured images, but they need to be large enough. Which site are you having trouble with?
-
@supernovia – just to follow through, does a featured image added to a post in such a theme show up in the Reader even though it doesn’t show up in the Post itself? Thanks.
-
@supernovia
You said,Big Brother does not support featured images on the blog page.
But I thought the cooktravisj was asking for a featured image on posts, not on the blog page, by saying (in the OP):
I am trying to add ‘featured images’ to appear above my posts.
Then, in my tests I found that featured images can be set in the post editor, but do not display on (or above) the posts. I have now tried additional sizes and found that featured images of file widths 1024, 1440, 1600, and 2000 pixels each fail to display on a post with the Big Brother theme activated.

I can’t get my featured images on my pages to show up either. I’m using the Colinear theme and I’ve set them to the size it suggests but they don’t show.
-
@justjennifer they should appear in the reader if the featured images are large enough, regardless of theme:
https://wordpress.com/read/blogs/114697736/Big Brother (and a few other themes I can think of — I’m sure there are others too) do not use featured images anywhere in the theme. If you look at the theme docs and features, these won’t list Featured Images.
If you wanted to force featured images to display anyway, you have to include them in the posts (for individual posts) or use a shortcode to display a list of posts with thumbnails.
If featured images are important, I recommend picking a theme that supports them. These themes do support featured images in some way within the theme:

Thanks for the reply. What are the current minimum dimensions for a featured image to show up in the Reader? This seems to change over time. Thanks again.
-
I couldn’t spot the dimensions needed, but I did a little testing and they’re smaller than what Facebook suggests for optimal previews:
https://developers.facebook.com/docs/sharing/best-practices#imagesSo I would just go with that size so it will work well on Facebook as well as in the reader.
-
I should add, too: I seem to recall Facebook won’t show the image unless it’s included somewhere in the page. So if your theme does not display featured images at all, you might include it in the post so it will work on FB.
-
Thanks @supernovia. Been difficult to pin down any concrete info about best image size for the Reader.
-
@justjennifer I feel that. These kinds of things change so often, too. I still have images on my blog that are 300×225, maybe even some 200x100s that I need to go through and update.
As far as I’m aware though, while their numbers are also a moving target, Facebook requires larger images than any other social media service. If someone is looking for a suggested minimum, I’d go with theirs.
