Editing document URLs, document names and tab titles
-
Hi there,
I’ve got a blog site hosted by wordpress (netquirks.co.uk) and want to see if I can edit the name, address bar URL and tab title that appears when clicking on a document that opens in a new browser window.
Say you go here: https://netquirks.co.uk/notes/wan/ and click on a document.
The document opens in a new window – but in that new window the URL is: https://netquirkengineering.files.wordpress.com/2016/04/bgp-path-control4.pdf and the title of the tab is NQ_Diagrams (which is incidentally the name of the omnigraffle file from which I exported the pdf).
So there are 3 things I want to change:
1) Change the name of the doc to bgp-path-control.pdf. It seems every time I upload a new version of the document an extra digit is added to the filename.
2) Set the URL to be something like https://netquirks.co.uk/notes/wan/bgp-path-control.pdf
3) Set the tab title to be something like “BGP Path Control”
Can any of these be done? Thanks in advance.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi, I think you are referring to ‘permalinks’ to use for any pages/files that you want to remain identifiable, unfortunately this is not a feature in WordPress.COM hosted sites currently* (although a popular request) but it is an option in WordPress.ORG sites which you may have full control over (see this page https://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Permalinks ). I’m not sure whether this is in the pipeline or not but watch this space!
*You can use permalinks from the ‘old’ wp-admin editor:
https://yoursite.url.wordpress.com/wp-admin/upload.php
but this will not resolve the next part you your issue, file versioning,
which is not supported afaik in WordPress.COM hosted sites (it would be possible using .ORG hosted as you would have direct access to the media library folder) as the file uploaded is saved in the system with date/time uuid. The page tab title will show the document title (rather than file name) so this will need to be set in the media file itself before upload.
Hope this helps!
Interesting site btw! I like a bit of the ‘dark art’ of networks!!

That URL link to access the older wp-admin page should of course have been:
https://yoursite.com/wp-admin/upload.php
or from your WordPress.COM URL:
