Domain update error
-
Hi,
My client recently changed their password to get their access back to their wordpress.com account, but then saw an error on their newsletters service about their domain configuration.
And when I go see the domain configuration in the wordpress admin, I can see a red alert with the message ‘We noticed that something wasn’t updated correctly,’ without further explanation.
What does this message actually means, and how can I get details on how to address the actual issue?
Thanks for your help!

Hi there!
I noticed that the domain is connected to a WordPress.com site via Domain Connection, but it has a custom IP address, which points the domain away from WordPress.com. As a result, the site you see now at epicerieloco.ca is NOT hosted by us at WordPress.com. Can you confirm if this is intended? In other words, the site that loads when you go to epicerieloco.ca, is this the correct/desired site?
If yes, this means your site isn’t hosted by us at WordPress.com, and so the Domain Connection is no longer needed.
There are some differences between WordPress.com and WordPress.org. If you aren’t sure about them, please check the following page that explains it: WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org.
We are unable to help with self-hosted WordPress.org sites. That is likely the error message you see when logging into the WordPress.com account.
You can log into the other account (or ask your client to do so) and cancel the Domain Connection if they won’t be hosting the site with us anymore. The subscription is not needed when the domain is not hosted on WordPress.com.
Feel free to let us know if you have more questions.

Yes, this is intended, my client’s website is hosted on Bluehost, despite their domain being registered via WordPress.com.
I’m not sure what this means re: the Domain Connection no longer needed. What operation should I perform to fix the issue?
Thanks for your help!

Let me explain the difference between domain connection and domain registration:
- Domain Connection Upgrade: This allows you to use a domain registered elsewhere with WordPress.com hosted sites.
- Domain Registration Upgrade: This involves registering a domain directly through WordPress.com.
In this case, the domain in question is only connected, not registered, with WordPress.com. It’s actually registered with GoDaddy. Since the website isn’t hosted on WordPress.com, a domain connection upgrade isn’t necessary. You can cancel it from the Purchases page under the @epicerieloco account: https://wordpress.com/me/purchases
I hope that clears things up! Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or need further assistance.

I wasn’t aware that the domain was registered with GoDaddy, my client set it up a long time ago and they probably forgot to mention that. Thank you, that clarified things indeed!
