Did buying my own domain make my view crash?

For eight years I’ve operated a wildlife website at bangkokherps.wordpress.com. It’s a field guide, so once I finished the main content in 2014 it’s been mostly static with an infrequently-updated blog on the side. At the peak I was getting about 600 views a day, but over the last couple years as I’ve updated less it’s tended to be more like 200-300 views a day. It’s been on the lower end more recently, I assumed because I hadn’t been making updates in a while. But I had never had less than 5000 views in a month at any point in the last five years.
On March 21st I upgraded to my own domain name for the first time and removed ads. All I did was take the “wordpress” out of the name. I also began updating the site one page at a time, removing dead links, replacing some pictures with better ones, improving grammar, etc.
My visits to the site immediately crashed. By March 27 I was down to just 120 views in a day, by April 3 it was regularly below 100, and yesterday it dropped to 45. The number of views per visitor has actually gone up, which means that the number of visitors is dropping even more dramatically than the number of page views.
What is happening, and how can I address it? I expected that there’d be perhaps a slight drop and then it would rebound. Three weeks in and I’m still steadily dropping. I didn’t know to expect this.
