Deleted Site Still Showing In Browser Search

  • On 16 June 19 I deleted my site https://wemrotary.wordpress.com/. However, if you Google Wem Rotary , the site still shows up. I cannot log in to the site through WordPress anymore. How can I get the site deleted permanently?

  • Hello @fredjclarke229,

In cases when you choose to delete a site, the delete action does not immediately remove it from search engine caches. It takes some time before search engines recrawl and reindex your deleted site. Meanwhile, anyone searching for your old xxx.wordpress.com site content will still be able to see it via the search engine cache. If you want it removed there, you’ll need to contact each search engine separately to request its removal. WordPress.com has no control over this. https://en.support.wordpress.com/search-engines/

    Hope this helps.

  • Hi Mywritingmuscle – thanks for that OK understood. Is it possible to restore the site or have I missed the chance of doing that? fred

  • June 16th was the day you created this fredjclarke229 account, which is probably why you don’t see the site in “My Sites” when logged in.

  • Hey @themagicrobot,

I was about to add that information now. Thank you for the update.

    Hey @fredjclarke229,

If https://wemrotary.wordpress.com/ , is the site you were enquiring about. Please know it is not deleted yet. I am able to view it using the url in a browser search.

To be certain this time around here is how you can delete a site you do not wish to own any more:

    Delete a Website

    Hope this helps.

  • Howdy –

I’m following up on the modlook tag that was added to this thread.

  • thanks for that OK understood. Is it possible to restore the site or have I missed the chance of doing that? fred

If The Rotary Club of Wem and District is the site you are still talking about, I don’t think you need to restore the https://wemrotary.wordpress.com/ yet, as I mentioned in the above reply adding to @themagicrobot’s input, your site is still active (not deleted) as seen in this screenshot linked below:

    Makes sense?

  • Hi folks
Yes, I became the editor of the site in June with the sole intention of deleting it. I did delete it from WorldPress and can no longer access it, it does not show up under ‘My Sites’. However, it does show up in browser searches. If I could get into it I could sort it out but I can’t. I suspect there is nothing to be done. Grateful for any thoughts though!!!

THE ABOVE REPLY HAD SOME FORMATTING ERRORS.

    ,

Okay, now it all makes some sense.

Yes, I became the editor of the site in June with the sole intention of deleting it.

First things first, a user with a editor role for a site here on WordPress.com cannot delete a site. Only a site owner ( the user that created the site) can delete a site.

I did delete it from WorldPress and can no longer access it, it does not show up under ‘My Sites’. However, it does show up in browser searches.

There is no way you would have had the access to delete the site being assigned a Editor user role. So that answers why the delete action wasn’t complete. I am not sure what made you say for certain you did delete the WordPress site.

If I could get into it I could sort it out but I can’t. I suspect there is nothing to be done.

By now, we have surely established that you are not the site owner for wemrotary.wordpress.com. Assuming this is your site and you had someone else work on it for you, who might have assigned you the role of an editor for wemrotary.wordpress.com. This means someone for sure has ownership for the site in talks here. In such a case, there is a way around this for sure. Here are some options I could think of:

    • Whoever assigned you the editor role (site owner) can go ahead and assign an administrator’s role first.
    • In the next step you accept the invitation and make sure you are now an administrator.
    • After which the site owner can transfer site ownership to another administrator(you).
    • Once that is accomplished, you can delete the site if you still wish to.

I hope this helps. All the best.
