Customizing my Blog
-
Hi all WordPress users, I’m trying to create my own blog but I find it a pain in the neck not being able to have themes that fit what I’m looking for. And as for coding, I’m pretty much a dummy at it. But, if I’m well informed by the other forums, I can only customize my theme by:
1) Upgrading and selecting the customize option, or
2) By creating my own theme by use of codeIs it only available to create your own theme ONLY by using code (HTML/CSS), or is there a simpler option?
(P.S. I’m hoping for fast replies) -
If none of the 350+ themes available on WordPress.com suit your needs, you can purchase the Premium Bundle upgrade which will give you additional design tools (font sets and colors) as well as allow you to directly work with a theme’s stylesheet (CSS) to entirely change the look of the theme.
Regardless of upgrade you will not be able to change the underlying code of the theme (PHP or HTML) or upload any 3rd party theme to use here on WPcom.

Thanks for your reply! So I can only customize the design with the tools in the Premium or Business plans…

You can make some customizations without upgrading your site. For example, you can modify the background colour and add a custom header in most themes. Some themes also offer free colour palettes, and some let you upload a logo. Changing the fonts, choosing custom colours, and adding your own custom CSS require an upgrade.
No themes on WordPress.com allow you to modify the HTML – that’s something you’d need a self-hosted site for. You can learn about the differences between WordPress.com and self-hosted here:
Just let me know if you have any other questions!

Hi, I’ve started a new blog and finding it hard to save the theme. I have already customised my blog but i don’t see it being saved, it goes back to being plain white without any background colours

Go to appearnace>customize and you should fine a button about your theme. Select the theme you want, then press save & publish at the top. Or go to appearnce>themes and select a theme. If the problem persists add the tag ‘modlook’ for staff to look at this situation.

Thanks for that but i tried to save and publish and when i go back to my site, the changes disappear.

pritush0308 – looks like you activated the Custom Design trial mode, so your changes can be previewed but not saved.
Click one of the two links – “purchase” or “exit” to either activate Custom Design or exit the trial mode. You may use one of the “featured palettes” for free, without needing Custom Design.

@kathrynwp-Thanks for providing the screenshot! It makes it much clearer. (Also glad to see there are more “featured palettes” being offered.)

Hi there,
Wondering when I purchase a package deal, does this include the COST of the theme? I see that each theme has a fee, is this in addition to the cost of the blog ?
-
@onfleekgreek – The Premium Bundle includes all the free themes available here https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/sort/free/ and a set of Design Tools to make changes to those free themes.
If you decide you want to use one of the Premium themes https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/sort/premium/ that is an additional one time purchase, but you can use that theme for as long as you have that site on WordPress.com.
More info here:
https://store.wordpress.com/plans/premium/ -
onfleekgreek, the WordPress.com Business plan includes unlimited access to all premium themes:
