CUSTOM DOMAIN – import from tumblr

  • Hello,
I am trying to import blog posts from tumblr, but I am using a custom domain.

I disabled the custom domain over 12 hours ago, restarted my computer, restarted the browser, cleared the cache. The importer still says I’m using a custom domain.

    Any tips?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Is there a way I can upload the blog if I export it to my local drive?

  • Hi there,

I don’t see any active Tumblr connections for http://luttecollective.wordpress.com/. Are you trying to import to that site, or another one?

If you’re getting the custom domain error even after switching off the domain on Tumblr’s end, disconnect in the importer on your WordPress.com site is it’s connected, then go to the Apps section in Tumblr settings and also remove WordPress there: https://www.tumblr.com/settings/apps

Then reconnect from our end and restart the import.

Is there a way I can upload the blog if I export it to my local drive?

Do you mean from a Tumblr export file? That cannot be uploaded to WordPress.com, no. Our importer pulls in your content directly from your Tumblr site via their API. We don’t have an importer that’s compatible with their export file.

  • Thank you.
I do have the tumblr import tool connected to luttecollective.wordpress.com so I am not sure why this is not showing up as connected for you.

How long after I disable the custom domain does it take to show up as no longer connected via custom domain? Because, when I disabled it, and then go to luttecollective.tumblr.com it still automatically goes to luttecollective.com, and says cannot be found. Do I need to disconnect it ALSO at the backend level via NameCheap (where I bought luttecollective.com)?

    Thank you,
    Hayley

  • Is there a way we can chat in real time? This is frustrating for me because I don’t want to wait for it to work, and have my custom domain down while I wait, so I am going to put it back up for now.

  • Hi Hayley –

Live chat is offered on paid plans with WordPress.com. At this point, you’re on a free plan, so we will continue to help here in the forums until things are resolved.

I’ve had a look and I do not see anything from Tumblr connected to WordPress.com.

What happens if you try using a different browser? Any better luck?

You shouldn’t need to change any settings from Name Cheap quite yet. Once the domain is connected to WordPress.com you’ll go to them and ask for the name servers to get updated to point the domain to WordPress.com. That’s step #2 on this page: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/
