Anybody else having problems getting notifications to load?

  • My notifications don’t load. when I click on the icon the box opens but all I get is the spinning loading circle. I let it spin for about 20 mins once, never loaded.

Also, the quick start box has disappeared from my dashboard.

    Thanks in advance…

  • Hi,

    My notifications don’t load.

That happens on my account if I choose the privacy setting “Accept third-party cookie Never at Firefox Privacy Settings. I’m not recommending that you change that setting, if this is the cause in your case, but setting it to “From visited” will anable the notifications to load.

Also, the quick start box has disappeared from my dashboard.

I don’t know what that is.

  • Thanks musicdoc1.

    But no dice.

I already had it set to keep cookies. BTW, the quick start box was a nice feature. It showed your last ten drafts in dashboard box. They must have done away with it when I wasn’t looking…

  • You’re welcome, clapso.
And thanks for the additional information. I’ve called for staff attention to the topic. Please wait for staff to respond here.

  • Thanks musicdoc1, I’ll patiently await the happiness engineers. In my almost decade long use of site. I’ve never seen any bug they couldn’t squash…

  • Hi there,

Let’s just clarify what you’re referring to with the quick start box. Are you referring to the latest drafts that appear on the right when you go to My Site ->Posts? That should still be there. If it’s not, that, combined with the notifications not loading, points to your browser not loading all information on the page.

Besides checking third party cookies, have you tried clearing the cache and cookies in your browser and checking if it works if you use a different browser? Also make sure you have JavaScript enabled in your browser and reset your modem/router for good measure:

    Browser Issues

  • Hi kokkieh,

Thanks for the clarification on the quick start box. It used to be on the /wp-admin dashboard. It was moved.

After going through the dreaded clearing the cache ritual that never works, I finally got around to what I should have tried in the first place: Run browser in safe mode. Without the add-ons running notifications load just fine.

One of my browser add-ons no likie what notifications is up to, or the two pieces of code are not on speaking terms. It will now take me weeks or perhaps months to figure out which add-on is the prob, and find that one check box I have to click the make the code play nicely.

‘puters make everything soooooooooo much more convenient…

Thanks for your assistance kokkieh. And thanks again musicdoc1.

  • The little bell icon in the top right corner of my dashboard is not working. It went on the fritz about 4 days ago, that I noticed. It will open, but it will not let me click on any of the followers who have liked or commented. I’ve tried refreshing, and I have tried the F5 key a bunch. It really is bugging me, because I cannot find the cause. I posted this on Friday and never even got an e-mail notice that anyone had answered my plea for help. Can someone please help me? I would really appreciate it a whole lot.

  • Hi sueashby7,

Did you read all the comments above yours? Perhaps there is info there that you can use to get a fix on your prob? Is there any part of what is said in the above comments that you need clarification on?

  • clapso,

Thank you so much, yes I did read all those. I do not understand how to do any of this. I am not tech minded at all. I just know that if it is working I can create, post and respond with people through that little bell icon.

I do not know anything about cookies “how to set, or where to set”

I did go through every setting under every topic down the left side of my dashboard and there is absolutely nothing about cookies.

I have no idea what a browser is or how to do any of that, where to look etc., Nor do I recall any of my passwords…..

I’m just a 55 year old grandma! There is no one here at my end who can help me. So I need someone who can “really” walk me through it, or fix it from the wp support end. I can’t get much attention on this, there.

So, I am still hanging out here, waiting. I will check back for more suggestions and/or help. Thank you so very much clapso. As you can see, I need in depth clarification on everything from the ground up! I’m unfortunately, one of those people who can read tutorials, but without the understanding, I have no clue as to what any of it is, says, or why. I guess it’s a bit like math. I can’t do that either.

  • I am sorry to cut in again so quickly, but I noticed that dear clapso had posted his link in case it would help. I don’t know if it did, or if it can, or even if I am aloud to post that, but this is the blog I need help with,

    http://perpetualessence.wordpress.com
I may not have done that right.

sueashby7 A browser is the program you are using to navigate the internet, to access your website. Let us know which browser you are using (Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Opera, Internet Explorer or Edge maybe). I will try to provide you with the instructions to run the website in safe mode.

  • Make sure you are running an up to date browser version found at https://browsehappy.com Try clearing your browser cache https://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/#clearing-your-browser-cache and see the tips here https://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/

If you are not successful please provide this specific info for Staff:
    (a) Exactly what kind of device you are using to connect to the internet and to WordPress.com.
    (b) Exactly which browser (and version of it) you’re using by checking here if necessary http://supportdetails.com/

  • P.S. I would enable third party cookies because that will usually fix the issue.
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/third-party-cookies/#how-do-i-enable-third-party-cookies

P.P.S. If you are in a private browsing mode then disable that. If you are running browser add-ons and extensions disable them.

  • sueashby7,

I’m afraid I can’t explain the above in any simpler terms. But worry not, the happiness engineers are paid zillions of drachmas per earth orbit to do just that!

*waves arms frantically to get their attention and shouts:”

Paging: kokkieh, it’s time to get out that hammer again!

  • Hello folks,

  • furioussnail, thank you, it is internet explorer. I just got updates right before this started a few days ago.

You are all such angels. timethief, I click on the links you provided, bless you, but none of it makes any sense to me. I may as well be reading a lost language. So, I still don’t understand how to enable third party cookies, or any thing else.

clapso, I am laughing so hard. Thank you for that.

timethief, I don’t understand. I have no way to do 2., 3 (any of it) 4. I do have flash. I tried updating this morning and it told me some thingy about adobe wasn’t right. Which I knew, because that happened a long time ago (last year) when I got flash updated and it wiped out my adobe 11. I never had this problem until, approximately 4 days ago. So I just clicked on the link you provided, but it doesn’t show anything about downloading it. See, I am so confused, but I am trying, as I know you are as well. 5. wont be able to, because I have no one to sit here and help me do it. 6. It’s a Dell PC. Internet Explorer 8 something or other but it has all the updates as of about the same time this started, or a few days before that maybe. This literally started acting up overnight, this recently passed Thursday. It may have been a week or two tops, before this started, that I got all of my updates. But I will look and see if there are anymore available. I’ll check it out right now.

Thank you all so much for being so helpful and patient with me. I’ll be back again.

  • I just got the only update of explorer I did not already have. Went to my dashboard and it didn’t help.

You are all so very awesome, and I appreciate everything you’ve all been very helpful. I am just tech. challenged. For some reason, I think it might have to do with the third party cookie stuff. But I could read that tutorial snippet fifty times and would never be able to make sense of it.

I’ll come back tomorrow afternoon and see what else I can actually do without a flesh and blood human sitting here to help. Food is calling my name (dark chocolate) breakfast, lunch and dinner.

  • @clapso

Any add-on that blocks JavaScript might be the culprit here. Ad-blockers and anti-virus/malware extensions are the usual suspects, but you should be able to add an exception in those for WordPress.com

It used to be on the /wp-admin dashboard. It was moved.

Do you mean the Quick Draft box? I still see that on my site in WP-Admin. It has a space to create a new draft from the main dashboard without having to click on Posts and it has my newest drafts listed underneath. Is that it?

That’s still working for me. If you don’t see it on your dashboard, click on Screen Options in the top right corner and make sure you have it enabled there.
