  So there is NO OPTION to add audio files unless I upgrade to a paid plan I can’t afford? Maybe I need to leave WordPress for a friendlier environment…

  If you would take a look in our support documentation, you would see you can embed audio files from several platforms, https://wordpress.com/support/audio/

  Thanks for your reply. Reading this again, it still seems as though these choices would require a paid service, on one end or the other. Soundcloud, for instance. I have several files there now, but that is the max allowed. Looks like I will have to start a You Tube channel and link to that.
